So are 4472's cylinders back to the original dimensions or are they still to the bored out size she gained under her previous owner?

 

I understand there's a set of wheels, cab sides and also the second 8 wheel tender used by Bittern, and maybe the knackered old cylinder, if it weren't scrapped.

One could suggest bringing the bits together to build a new Gresley A1, would be a bit of a knacker (or look like barry wreck) so why bother.

Thank you for the above information; I was aware of the NRM owning the boiler before, but I didn't make my original statement clear (I was questioning Fish, the southall fitter, who earlier intimated that Scotsman was sold as seen, simply engine and tender, as to the validity of his statement. That was clearly inaccurate as both the cylinder, and boiler were sold on to the NRM).

I am thinking of writing a letter of complaint to Steam Railway Magazine - the rather petulant (again) attitude pervading from the editorship and magazine as a whole towards Scotsman, the people behind it, and mostly its livery is more than wearisome: it is now becoming downright disrespectful considering the question of livery has been asked, answered, and repeatedly answered over the last five years.

I have kept the subscription more as a reminder of my late grandfather than a particular fondness for the magazine at present; despite the wonderful memories of reading the latest issue together with him on many occasions all those years ago. The overall tone is threatening to ruin those happy memories, that is for certain...

Spare cylinders and boiler and support coach and I be leave the fake name plates ,which i think are on the loco as well went to the NRM, the spare tender went to the A1, then coach came back and spare tender from A1 which is the water carrier, but vac parts were taken off loco at last overhaul before NRM overhaul, fish7373 81c fitter

 

The water carrier was purchased from Ian Storey by the A1SLT, the body was totally rotten and scrapped but the frames were cleaned up for use with 60163. However, conversion to roller bearing form meant it was more sensible to start afresh and the frames were sold on to Jeremy Hosking and form the basis of Bittern / DoNZ's water carrier.

Looks lilke Scotsman has a deadline to meet. It is programmed to 'carry' the Olympic flame from York on 20th June 2012. Hopefully, completion and running in will be well before then but, with its jinxed progress so far, it will still need to be fingers crossed

Scotsmans down to do the York-Edinburgh leg of Great Britain V in APRIL so I hope it is up and running in time for that so its deadline is earlier than you first thought.
