Front bogies

Really I sould know this but my mind has gone blank, on engines with front bogies, can the bogies pivot or are they fixed?

 

If they cannot pivot, then surely they are not bogies? ;-)

That said, you do often find older engines with fixed carrying wheels - Iron Duke for example.

 

They Swivel. That is part of the point of them, not just to articulate the loco, but also to lead the fixed wheel base into curves.

 

Not only that, but on engine bogies the pivot point is sprung loaded so it can move sideways - allowing the engine to negotiate tighter curves.

This was demonstrated graphically when we moved the engines into the Engine House museum at Highley over very tight curves. The one engine we thought we'd have trouble with, Hagley Hall, went in like a dream; the bogie just steered it in.
