    I wonder if anyone can help? How did Furness lubricators work ie were they a form of displacement lubricator or did they work entirely by gravity or non of the above.

    In essence, just a conventional lubricator with tail trimmings. However, there was a non-return valve between the oilpot and the cylinder which was closed by steam and prevented them feeding whilst the regulator was open or otherwise pressurised. Supposedly the return stroke of the piston sucked the oil into the cylinder but it would only suck any oil deposited by the trimming. Next to useless if the non-return valve leaked even slightly.
