Over the weekend, I was looking at a book in Tesco, called "Manchester in the 1970s". One photograph showed a cut-down 0-6-0 locomotive, which was captioned as being on carriage warming duties, and was quoted as probably being a Barton Wright locomotive of LYR origin.

Looking at the photo, it was plain to see that it was an ex-Midland / LMS loco, either a 3F tender loco or a Jinty. The number was in British Railways style numerals, but on the firebox cladding, the number being 2022. The dome was unclad, there was no cab, and some vertical pipe runs were present on the side off the footplate, looped over like railings. The photograph was said to have been taken in 1972.

Does anyone know what this locomotive was, or what became of it?

    Richard.

A bit of Googling found this:
    http://www.lostockhallmpd.org.uk/10d.html

Scroll down a bit - under the first two black & white photos of LMS 3Fs, there are some details in the second paragraph which starts "Another long-time 10D resident ..."

Interesting photo on that website of 48618, not only with a lined out tender but also with lining on the cabside - most unusual for an 8F - wonder if it was done by enthusiasts to match the tender?

The K1 fulfilled a similar duty to Phillips refinery on Teesside, but it was kept more intact than your description.

Absolutely facinating link to Lostock Hall. Brought back childhood memories of cycling from Chorley to wonder amongst the rotting hulks waiting to be scrapped in the dying days of steam. A few bits fell off into our saddle bags sometimes!
