    latest bit of news,which I hope to have some pics on for all tommorow:

    0800 tomorrow morning 2 x London Underground liveried class 20s towing a third rail-blue liveried class 20 are due to arrive at Matlock.

    They will proceed to Rowsley where the rail-blue 20 will go into immediate use on Peak Rail services tomorrow and for the next 2 weeks.

    The LUL 20s will be split, and 1 of them will be turned on Rowsley turntable.

    0900 depart Rowsley the re-joined 2 LUL 20s towing D8 Penyghent to the North Norfolk Railway for an imminent gala. NNR have no turntable which is why 1 LUL 20 is being turned at Rowsley in preparation for the NNR gala requirements.

    Full details in Real Time trains.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Peak Forester railtour to Rowsley is Duchess to Derby. The Duchess is too long for Rowsley turntable so the train will be diesel-hauled from Derby and is due to arrive in Matlock 1523 then Rowsley 1548.
    Return departs Rowsley 1800, and Matlock platform 1 at 1855.
    Loco not known, but last time a similar move occurred a WCR Class 47 was used.
    Full details in Real Time trains.
    What is the running number of this engine. I don't recall any Stanier engine being named Duchess to Derby. Sorry misread the original posting as Duchess of Derby.
    I think the "Duchess to Derby" is the name of the train, not the loco hauling it!
    "Duchess to Derby" was a description, as in Duchess as far as Derby , from there other motive power will be used.
    And they are indeed brilliant pics frank . I like the way the daisies come out ,so vibrant
    In other news S&T
    John Pete and myself this week fitted the extra metal braces to gates 1 and 3 at church lane to prevent any further twisting of the gate cross pieces which have been noted, gates 2 and 4 have no problems at all though gate 4 is technically the smallest of the gates due to the gate posts proximity to the old crossing house , it was noted when we got into the job that for some reason gate 1 had some extra holes drilled through it near the upright joists which have never been plugged or used (maybe originally they were for extra spars?) and that would account for some of the drop in that gate.
    That job unfortunately took all day to complete but at least the wood when drilled didn't feel soft so the gate timber seems to be good, Dave will paint up the woodwork around where the spars have been fitted and the gate targets will be repainted when I'm next down, Pete and myself had a look at gate 4 which is slightly down and this is either down to an apparent slight tilt in the actual gate post or the gate dropping as it is wood, we've measured up and assessed that a small shim fitted between the securing bolt and the post bracket should lift the gate sever so slightly upwards,but this will require a jack or two putting under the gate to keep the weight when we loosen the bolts to fit the shim,all of which will have to be done on a non running day but for this week I'm busy looking after the kids while the wife's away so that will have to wait a week which gives me time to make the shim plates up too.
    I think this Saturday is the last chance to ride behind 20189 at Peak Rail - I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong!
    Sunday should see the return of D8 from its holiday in Norfolk and the Peak Park Preserved Bus Gathering transpirebus.org/peak-park-rally/
    I think you're correct, the class 20 was I was told only here for the duration of D8s trip to Norfolk and back.
    I'm glad you put the link up to the bus rally Was just about to do that, as usual all buses should be in the very large car park and picnic areas at Rowsley, I'm told several will also be doing trips locally for pundits, if anything to go by in previous years,there's the one to Matlock via Darley with some good photo opportunities as well as others to bakewell and chatsworth etc, depending on how my motor behaves I may get down to take some pics
  11. I first read this as "... a third rail, blue-liveried Class 20..." ;)
    I was going to comment that it was some modification!
    And some people say that punctuation doesn't. Matter.
    Never mind the punctuation, what about the spelling. 'Well, I would have', obviously. ;)
    If anyone saw the photo of a pair of 20s derailed, one on its side, surrounded by 16t mineral wagons in various shapes and positions in the Steam in the Peak one before last, one of them was this loco. The owner informed me it ran away with its train of 16tonners on the approach to Westhouses sidings, and ran into loaded 16t'ers. It went back to English Electric for repairs, gaining a new cab and bogies in the process, as it was relatively new at the time. https://www.flickr.com/photos/56249446@N06/8262205494/in/photostream/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/56249446@N06/8261171275/in/photostream/
    I just hope no one is intending to put mineral wagons behind the loco while it is at Peak Rail! The location was also identified by Brian Cuttell and this source will appear in my next archivist's item in Peak Express.
    Joke, Harvey!
    Declination of the verb 'of ':
    I of
    I will of
    I did of
    I would of
    I could of
    I should of
    I used to of
    etc
    image.jpeg Managed to get down today to see the bus rally,the railway was busy anyway with it being Father's Day,and oddly enough not everyone wanted to go to the beach in this glorious weather so there was a lot of families just down for a ride too and visiting the area,chatsworth was very busy I noted.
    Elsewhere I noted at Darley the telephone boxes were being painted,the narrow gauge has done bit more track laying outside their shed at Rowsley Ben and the LMSCA are busy with bits for Rowsley box,plus more of the steelwork has been completed ready in the workshop for Rowsley cabin.
    D8 has returned and the class twenty has left the railway now.
    Some pictures from the bus rally
    Just picked up the June edition of Modern Railways - used to buy this regularly years ago. It contains an interesting article on re opening the Matlock-Buxton route to provide a quicker link between the East Midlands and Manchester. It mentions Peak Rail's plans.
    Must have a look. What nonsense it was for Barbara Castle to close just 15 miles but therefore divide a strategic route from Derby/Nottingham to Manchester/Liverpool. Without having read the article though I have to say that re-opening was proposed in 1985 and again in the late 1990s, prompting the railway to get some Mk2s as these were then seen as necessary to run on the big railway.
