Early morning at Winwick today

 

I wondered if that pond would have appeared at Winwick after all the recent rain, but assumed the train would be slowing for the junction to Earlestown.

 

Friend on today's (18/12/21) Saphos reports 46100 declared failure near Euxton and fire dropped. Apology if there is a separate thread for today..... Just seen it.

 

So if rumours are correct, LSL have purchased Upperby from DBC, suppose makes sense to have a northern base.

 

Depends what the base is for. It might be to add engineering capacity. On the market side, what opportunities would it really add to what they have at the moment? Carlisle and hinterland is not a big place.

 

Saves a few empty stock movements for the 'Staycation Express' service over the S and C, but that wouldn't be the sole motivation surely? Two long sidings and a few inspection pits/roads would free up the congestion at LSL Crewe. There are currently no buildings at Upperby to keep loco's and stock under cover. No doubt if true, we will discover the reasoning in due course.

 

I hope it is better thought out than West Coast Railways fiasco at Hellifield. An unused shed rotting away holding just a few privately owned wagons and a few pigeons, although it has given us a good sized car park for the various comings and goings there.

Upperby, March 1995. Depot closed at the end of that month.



Interior of the carriage shed - pity it was first vandalised, then demolished. Building, as pictured, would have been ideal for someone such as LSL.



Taken with mobile phone, but it shows what the area looks like now; pit roads still there but bushes are growing out of them. The front part of the shed is the only bit left standing, for some reason..

 

Another view showing the other side of the building with its sidings. Ralph is quite right to mention security. When preserved steam was using the depot up until the last days of BR, the depot was a 24 hour operation with the usual outside lights etc. Near to the end of March 1995, the staff had already been withdrawn and the security lights had been switched off. Different ball game then.

 

A few hungry rottweilers should sort that out....
