Who says that there's no strategic reserve?

Can you imagine this happening in the UK?
(with thanks to Ben for providing the link)

My German not being that good- whats the story? Impressive video but are they preserved locos in store or what!?!
They could do with investing in a shunting loco of some sorts though! :smt003

It's in Sweden and it occurred last summer. These were locos that were locked away in a shed and part of the Swedish strategic reserve. Trees had to be cut down to access the shed and, if you notice, a temporary connection had to be made to get them out. It amused (and amazed) me to see that they were tagged on to the back of a passenger train for movement to their intended destination.

What became of them? Were they cut up? I see that DB has just cut up three stored 2-10-0s - not every country is as sentimental as the UK!

I think the Bressingham loco King Haakon came from a reserve stored in tunnels in Norway. Colin

What you don't realise is that our strategic reserve is right infront of your nose. :-$
Most of them are at work every weekend. All those well maintained privately owned locos that will just be commandeered if the need arises. Meanwhile the government is allowing the enthusiasts to keep them in working order. Simple see, so it doesn't cost them anything.

I think that probably infers a little bit too much thinking from the government to be believeable. It is far too a logical thought to have come from that source! (sorry politics creeping in!)

Now if and that's a big IF there is a British Strategic reserve I think that one of their number should be preserved as part of the National Collection in as found condition. All that has to be done now is find it. :-k

Isn't the reason why 4472 was bought "for the National Collection" ( what a superb code phrase by the way ) as more people have experience of this than any other engine thus reducing training needs in a post-apocalyptic world.

The three locos are Swedish Class B 4-6-0s:
    1037
    1108
    1267

These are often called the Black 5's of Sweden and there are many preserved, including 2 in England and 1 in the USA.

Full list of Swedish (SJ) preserved steam locos can be found at http://nanjing.dk/anglok.htm

How long had these locos been tucked away for? The motion towards the end of the fottage looked pretty good on them? Had nothing been done such as oiling up etc before they were moved?

There's a lot more of them than there are Black 5s, by the look of that list!

    hello
regards a uk strategic reserve about twenty five years ago whilst waiting on the main line for a late running clunk castle i was asked by a passer by what we were waiting for having told him he related this story
because he had a passing interest in steam his brother in law mentioned that he had seen some steam locos where he was working as an electricion there were about ten of them and were all painted battleship grey the location was the mod fenny compton the date was 1966 and were parked up in one line leading to a grassed over bunker he had seen them on a thusday when he had gone back the following tuesday they had gone so had the track leading to the now bricked up bunker
he showed him some steam books to see if he could identify them altough un sure he thought they were in the style of a castle , manor or hall
i took this all with a pinch of salt but one of our group reckoned there were gwr locos that disappeared soon after being overalled at swindon and dont appear on any scrap lists this all at the time of cold war and oil crisis and this is one of the places where the green godess's came from when the firemen went on strike
to add to this a couple of years ago i had through work the opportunity to visit fenny compton and was taken on a tour of the site i eventuly had to relate my story to my guide his answer NO COMMENT and a wink althogh he did say there were several hundred thousand tents and blankets stored there together with many tons of boiled sweets
please let me know your thoughts
    thanks
