Thomas Bach rebuild has been completed at North Bay Railway Engineering, Darlington.
To be returned to Llanberis next week.

Why is it got a short chimeney now? It’s shorter than the cab and looks wrong. I thought it had a big one last time.

Do you know why it was given a big one for so long

 

Looks same size as over 10 years ago.
I doubt the chimney height would of changed, but it would make more sense for the cab height to of been raised within preservation (was it even one of the class with a cab in the quarries) to give crews more comfort.

 

I've got it in mind that the cabbed Hunslets were used at Port Dinorwic. No cab and short chimney would suit Quarry work much better. Domeless boiler suggests a quarry loco.

I'm told the drawings for'Michael', Wn 1709 built in 1932 with a cab, shows it with a short chimney which it carries to this day.

 

I believe all the Dinorwic Port Class Hunslets (No. 1, Dolbadarn, Michael) had the short chimney / cab combo, as does the new(ish) build Statfold - Jack Lane has always had a taller chimney and no cab. All except the former No. 1, now Lady Joan at Bredgar and Jack Lane still do.

Obviously Wild Aster / Thomas Bach is an Alice Class, and her short chimney dates from the days she had no cab. Is it possible she had it returned to being short when she ran cabless for a while a couple of years ago?

It is interesting. I’m just interested as why because it obviously looks better with the tall one with the cab but now the original has been fitted it looks like. Yet doesn’t match up with the cab. Elidir has got a big one and is the same type? Why are they so confusing!!

Category 1 daft question. Why was Holy War so named? I know it is historic and all that, and like all of the quarry Hunslets, the name is delightfully eccentric. Imagine finding a Bagnall running about on the sub-continent bearing the name "Jihad"

 

I believe that they were all named after racehorses owned by the owners of the Dinorwic Quarries. Hence Rough Pup, By contrast, the rather unpleasant Douglas-Pennants named their locos after themselves.

 

Probably a daft and incorrect answer (which will keep things ticking any way) but weren't some of the locos named after race horses?

 

Dinorwic was owned by the Duff Asheton Smiths. As noted above most, but not all, of the Dinorwic locos were named after the family's racehorses - some were named after family members such as 'Alice' named after Laura Alice Duff Asheton Smith. The same personage gave the ill fated Snowdon Mtn. Rly. Loco No.1 'L.A.D.A.S.' its name.

Cliff Thomas's wonderful book "Quarry Hunslets of N.Wales" tells one everything a decent person needs to know about these little locos - including the origins of their names!

Aren't the Snowdon locos named after the family? Enid etc

What I can't work out is if there is a connection with LADAS the Snowdon loco, and Ladas the LNER loco that was named after a horse. Ladas (Snowdon) was built 1895 and Ladas (horse) won the Derby in 1884.

I take back what I said about the Douglas Pennants (who were pretty unpleasant) the Duff Assherton Smiths were also pretty unpleasant. According to ODNB George William D A S (Alice's father) shot a forrester as well generally being everything you would expect of a C19 Quarry Owner.
