Valentas

Does anybody know if there are any Valenta engined HST power cars still running?

 

Not in service, they've all been replaced. However, the prototype power car is in running order, based at Ruddington.

If you can secure a few Valenta engines for storage now, Presumably they could be retro fitted when the time comes for production power cars to be available to pres.

 

What was in/is now in the XPTs? One hit a car on a crossing earlier this week.

 

I believe that's the HST groups plan, someone did mention to me how many power units they have when 41001 visited the Mid Norfolk last year. They do have a few.

 

When I heard one pass me in WoyWoy a couple of years ago, it definitely wasn't Valenta powered.

VP185s the same as the East Midlands Trains fleet.

 

They have about a dozen Valentas in safe storage, all obtained during the reengineering programme a few years ago. I've never met them but that group appear to have the right ideas...

Genuine question................why were the Valentas dumped in favour of the MTU units?

 

Was it not emissions, and fuel consumption.

 

I think age may have come into it too, running at 125mph day in day out for 30 odd years is bound to cause a bit of wear and tear.

All three from what I have heard.
Also as the MTU units were more reliable that meant fewer spares needed, which then lowers costs.
However much I liked the scream of valenta engined HST's, commuting into Paddington became much more reliable with the introduction of the MTU engined power cars.
