I know of at least one group who looked at a similar solution but stuck with chain in the end.

This beggars belief! How a thread that could be an interesting discussion about: quite how a loco that took many years and several £100,000s to restore; has had to be all but taken completely to bits, and put back together, after only a few miles in preservation.
But no, as usual; every thread about a Bulleid loco, has to descend into "the type I like is better than the type I don't like, na-na-na-na-na-na!"

Most new engines are returning to chains. Several advantages to them but the main one being they're much more reliable than rubber bands, and presumably no louder once you've stuck a massive plastic cover over the engine.

That maybe so but all the major car makers use them for the drive to camshafts, Harley Davidson use them as final drive to the back wheel and other motorcycles use them for primary drive, crankshaft to gearbox.

Didn't Lamiel go through a carriage wash a few years ago by accident? Got a feeling the crew ended up a little soggy...

The oil drilling industry has gone from chains to belt drives for its newer high-pressure mud pumps (about 1600+ hp)

Most car manufactures went over to chains again over the last five to ten years. The biggest issue with chain driven engines are the tension system that keeps the chain at the right tension. Most manufactures use a small fluid tensioner that over a period of time leaks out fluid and causes the chain to become slack. This then causes the chain to jump over sprocket teeth which then causes the engine timing to become wrong. Bang goes your engine. Backing the seventies and eighties I remember selling fibre/plastic gears that some engines used in stead of belts and chains which didn't fair any better.

Work was going ahead on 92212 to ML standard at the MHR until Network Rail said the class was banned due to the flangeless centre driving wheel.

From memory there was a considerable amount of work done on 92212 by the previous owning group.

Quite right. I was told about a number of ML runs planned for 92212 by one of the folks who used to be involved with the MHR Daylight Railtours operation.

Main drawback of the toothed belts (in my time in the bike trade at least) is that they are much more bulky than roller chains. No idea whether that would be an issue for the Bulleids of course.
The toothed metal chains used for many motorcycle primary drives are quite a different animal again to the rubber belts and need very serious lubrication.

Yikes, the toothed metal chains and rubber belts. Not to mention serious lubrication.

Me reading that less than half an hour after an old interview with Cynthia Payne on BBC 4 tonight.

And now, getting back to topic. What happened to 34046's test run today?

I was driving myself crazy earlier today while strolling down UKsteam. I see that RYTC's Jolly Fisherman on July 13 is fast approaching. There is a TBA next to the Second Weymouth Express so that the schedule isn't crammed for Braunton. I won't be surprised if 44932 makes another jaunt down from Carnforth to Bristol if needed for the Second Weymouth on the 14th or for Tangmere to do the Jolly Fisherman on the 13th.

Doubtful; latest info I heard is that faulty air-brake was returned on Monday 01/07 but further testing is to take place on ELR before move to Carnforth and test run will be considered. No date has been given for the ELR - Carnforth move.
