Some good images of steam locomotives but I thought I was watching something from the "Fast Show" and kept thinking of those sketches about "Brilliant". "Aren't steam locomotives brilliant? They can paint them different colours and put different nameplates on them and wind up saddoes who've nothing better to do than take pictures and wear bad taste anoraks." (I'll grant him that Tornado is not in bad taste though!) Love it!

    NAH, still not buying it.

If that was Leander, its had a new tender tank (but a pretty rough welded one on the firemans side.. I wouldnt be paying for that if I'd bought and paid for a new one, but if that was repairing the existing one, in Leanders case.. the rest of it would be riveted)... and it's had a new smokebox, and it's got suddenly a lot of pitting on the sides of the frames on the firemans side from those videos. For whatever reason, as well as a maroon repaint, it's had a black repaint of the tender chassis and various parts of the frames as well.. which wouldnt add up if it was staying maroon... very least it'd be left "as is".

45699 with a quick repaint maroon it is for me.

Who knows maybe on Monday April 1st we will see Leander rolled out in BR Green with Galatea's nameplates.. and a riveted tender and steam lance cock on the smoke box.
Has anyone seen 44932 this year or maybe 45231 perhaps.. theres still more fun to be had in Carnforth ?

...Or as 45562 "Alberta", "it was never really scrapped you know, such a useful engine it was quietly put into the strategic reserve".... said an un-named secret source...

Yeah that same source said to me theres 700 WD's awaiting to come out of an underground cave should North Korea invade the South and a fleet of Duchesses waiting to take over the west coast franchise.

According to legend, Galatea is the woman in this picture, that was invented by a fella from Cyprus in the 18th century for this carving and is not named as such in Greek mythology.

So in true form 45699 is the loco in this picture as restored by a bloke in Carnforth in the 21st century, using bits of another name at the time of the fall of Cyprus.

Doesn't kolhapur have Albertas tender ?
The jubilee fleet seems to have the parentage of a small town, and everyone has the whisper on every bit of gossip.

A jubilee back on the main line has got to be a good thing whichever one it really is, surely
I must admit out of all of them "Bahamas" is my favourite

From someone who knows sod all about Jubilee performance bar a couple of runs behind Leander - does the double chimney on Bahamas make any appreciable difference to performance ?.

In the days of Bahamas being mainline from Dinting, the lads there maintained that the loco used less water, ("less water" I assume than Leander, which was for a time also operating out of Dinting, so crews had a comparator) .Presumably by virtue of a more efficient exhaust sytem. ( I say that and defer to someone with tech. knowledge).

Must admit though, I have always thought the double chimney spoils the loco's looks.

Wouldn't be a surprise if tomorrow's e+c move to Crewe was a test run and the tour used as loaded with diesel as insurance.

How can it be in the wrong thread when 26D_M mentioned that 45699 could be on a test run this morning so I answered the question that it wasn't .

I was told by a reliable source on Thursday on the vintage trains trip that the engine was Leander. Hed been on the shed a week before and crystal cleAr galatea green, leander red. I agree re the lining and non riveted tender being suspicious. However I struggle to see why wcr would not send Galatea out sporting her own number. It is after all a historic and momentous occasion?
