Thank you very much for highlighting this. I've just booked for the 19th as £29 is a super price, & it'll be my first ever mainline steam excursion so really looking forward to it.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Some passengers get off at Bournemouth, rather than stay on until Weymouth, so this appears to be a very good way to fill those empty seats and also help pay those ever increasing costs of running railtours.

Has anyone else noticed that the whistle sounds different to the one on 70013? Its a lot higher pitched!

Hopefully whatever happened out on the mainline today has not resulted in any damage to 70000.

Reported stopped at Warminster due to water shortage.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

I was at Warminster this afternoon soon after the alarm was raised! The Fire Brigade arrived quickly to top it up and the fire did not have to be dropped. The Traction Inspector declared it a failure to prevent any damage to the loco so hopefully the cause of its failure (injectors?) will not be serious.

70000's perfomance on VSOE was nothing short of being a great run. How many would say that Britannia's run was a great highlight to calander year 2011?

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

I was on the support crew for this job. 70K handled the train in fine style and did not need to be worked hard to achieve this. It was my highlight of 2011 so far, because the combination of 70K in its current livery and a 510-ton pullman set was pretty unique and we answered several people, in emphatic style, who questioned whether the loco was up to the job?

But I would suggest 60163's run Glasgow to Crewe could be the true headline performance of the year.

    Re: 70000 "Britannia" at Crewe

Wasn't there and am only guessing but, from your description, it sounds as though it has picked up the water for whatever reason. Driver needs to shut/reduce the regulator, hence safety valves lifting, and open the drain cocks, hence clouds of steam. Boiler too full can also choke the whistle. Happens all too often these days for a variety of reasons.

I suppose we should wait for the none stop to Glasgow with 6201 and the guv before the final decision is made. I want to film that one.

I agree about waiting for Lizzies performance over Beattock.

Regardless, the 70000 on the VSOE was a rare occasion with the surprise factor. 70000's performance was nothing less than phenonminal. A win-win for passengers and fans alike.

I love the line to Bristol. It is the perfect surface to see high speed steam passenger locomotives doing what they do best.

There's an interesting diary entry on The Prince of Wales website for Jan 24th. Pity they can't spell Britannia correctly, but then the name Britannia hardly has any "royal" connectiuons does it!?
