    Sorry perhaps my post wasn't the clearest. I meant that they are all excellent (and unfortunately very rare) examples of Austerities in preservation that look like they should. I didn't mean that they will all be appearing at the charter and was trying to congratulate the Foxfield on having some fantastic Austerities (now where is the green paint for Whiston...).

    The charter is almost a sell out with only one Austerity (or maybe two!). If anyone wants to attend let me know very soon please. 37255 (why a ballast engine?)- I can probably sort you a lift from the M1 between Lufbra and Chesterfield. PM me.

    But Dubsy has FIVE cylinders ( + the brake cylinder sitting on the milling m/c at the moment ). Think about it, two main + two lifting + slewing engine.

    For the record the cracked right hand cylinder has been removed from the engine & is off site for restoration at the moment. No easy task that includes fitting a liner, reducing the piston dia & fitting new rings.

    The boiler is ready for tubes - to be ordered soon having measured up last week.

    The Loco is back on its wheels, valve gear in place & new big ends machined & fitted. Castings for little ends are about to be ordered. Smoke box door "conserved" and fitted to new smokebox. The smashed brake cylinder has had a new section cast and fitted ( at some cost ! ).

    Members of ARISE may want to help out with this project as there is a great deal to do if it is to steam at the 2009 Foxfield Gala. I can plan out regular working days - a few hands every few weeks are required at this stage & would be a great help. What better "street cred" than a working crane tank - perhaps she should be the mascot for the group. The left hand cylinder is ready for the final fitting of piston, covers, slide bar & valve chest cover. The left hand big end can then also be set up. I would be happy to contact "the press" regarding members of ARISE mucking in etc etc...

    Lots to do, some fun to be had, regular tea provided + stove pot.

    Dont worry about a lack of skills - join the club !, + when its finished you can use it ( subject to training ) since I will be working on Hawarden !. I plan to use Dubsy to strip some parts off said loco - all other lifing jobs considered, no job to small !.

    Yeah, it was on eBay for a week or so. I don't know what happened to it in the end, but it was still outside the shed at Cranmore over Christmas, so I would assume that a deal was not done, for whatever reason. As I understand it, a fair bit of work is needed to get it back into traffic and I think (don't quote me on this) that the injectors are ones salvaged from a traction engine, which was a source of problems near to the end of its last ticket. I can also verify, from first hand experience, that its' water tank contains quite a lot of rust, which has flaked off the lining of the tank. Having said all that, it was a fairly gutsy machine, given its' size.

    Barclay 945 of 1904 (aka "Annie") at Chatham Historic Dockyard has suffered a similar fate, being "Westernised" and painted in early BR...check out that awful safety valve cover!

    p.s. What is the point of the extra sheeting added between cylinders and running plate?

    Not a favourite of mine I have to admit! I really wish the Swansea Harbour Industrialisation Trust (later sadly just SHT) had never been taken over by the Gas Works Railway.

    Actually it was the Swansea Harbour Improvement Trust but the initials still spell something about as fragrant as a gas works.

    what's with the olio buffers???? I can't belive they painted over the windows too!!!

    The virtical plate is a bit of a bodge... the early barclays have horazontal cylinders with cast virtical sides... and the virtical plate was just a cosmetic thing to tidy up the sides of the casting. Looking at this, it's got the later slope sided cylinders but they've added a plate to make it look right. (ish). There's various pics on my website.

    Right then are we doing the innagural meeting of Arise on Coal Train Day at Tanfield Feb 15. I would like to suggest the meeting after the event at the Causey Arch Inn otherwise I'm screwed... I'm gonna have to fire!
