RT/RTL's what is this of what you speak ?

Why yet again did they have to fudge the issue and choose joint winners (unless they want to see the difference in costs maybe)? Is there no one capable of making a decision in this country anymore?

If Aston get it can we expect V12 engines and ejector seats for any unruly Chavs =D>

There always has to be someone who wants to spoil a good idea.

But Labour's transport spokesperson on the London Assembly, Val Shawcross, said: "The design competition may have been fun and the winning designs are extremely impressive, but this is not a serious way to make policy and not a worthwhile use of public money.

"I have yet to hear one convincing argument for why London needs a new double-decker bus and until Boris comes up with some, Londoners will see this as little more than a vanity project."

Why is it not a convincing way to make policy, many other projects have resulted from a design competition, and don't lecture us on the worthwhile use of public money.. ](*,)
I have also heard many good arguments why a double decker bus is better than a bendy one.

Don't worry Ralph - I think NuLabour will be a fading memory before too long - the problem is that we had eighteen years of spivvery, ten years of incompetence - and now face the prospect of Call me Dave - I'll say ANYTHING you want me to -

I wonder what the trade-offs are with the bendy buses? The are longer than a double decker, therefore if a double deck fleet is replaced by them that surely adds to congestion, purely through the extra length. But are they lighter and therefore able to accelerate faster?

    Dan

    RM - standard length
RML - lengthened version by approximately 3ft
RMC - coach version (for London Country) with pneumatic rear doors
RCL - lengthened coach version (for London Country) with pneumatic rear doors
RMA - front entrance version for British European Airways (later BA), sold to LT in the 1970’s (?) and only identified as RMA’s by LT
RMF – lengthened front entrance version, prototype (RMF 1254) used by LT, further 50 of this type sold to Northern General (along with 1254)
FRM – prototype front door/rear engine design based on the Routemaster body, not successful only 1 every built in 1966(?)

A very good percentage of Routemaster survive all round the world with around 1,000 of the production run of 2,900 Routemasters in existence.

Both the new buses are nice enough but I personally prefer the Freight Bus concept. http://www.autoblog.com/photos/freight- ... t/1217848/

Its a pity they dont just bring back the real routemasters (even if they have got to re-engine them again to meet the new Euro requirements).

Come to think of it why not bring back the old RT"s and trams too!

Just one point the RMC and RCL built for London Transport -Country Bus services to operate the Green Line cross London limited stop routes. London Country inherited them when the country routes were passed to the National Bus Company in 1968 or 1969.
Some of these routes were very long, 716A Woking to Stevenage took over 3 hours end to end. I wonder if anyone ever travelled end to end on the greenline routes?

Some RCL's were purchased back from London Country in the early 1980's to cover vehicle shortages due to the abysmal reliability of the AEC Swifts (SM/SMS classes) and Daimler Fleetlines (DMS class).

    Regards, Neil

According to a London cabbie last week the bendy buses completely destroy the slow and sometimes painful traffic flow in Central London completely. Their length straddles junctions bringing everything to a halt.

Might explain why central London still seems congested even after the Congestion Charge was brought in!!

I use a Bendy Bus everyday to get from Waterloo to Holborn. They have zero character, but they are efficient - three doors mean very quick unloading and loading, and I can't see that being replicated on a double decker. Too much time involved with people getting upstairs.

I love the routemaster, and have been known to walk to Fleet Street to catch a routemaster if I'm meeting someone near Trafalgar Square! But the new routemaster concept is a populist vanity project for Boris, and not a sensible solution to the capital's transport problems. Stick a retro front on any modern double decker and 99% of the punters would think it's a new routemaster anyway!
