These days I'm primarily a steam fan but am for some reason getting a little nostalgic about the late 70s/80s period when I used to travel around the country mainly in search of diesel locos. During that period I must have visited around 20-25 depots, some of them several times - those were the days when you could either get round a shed unnoticed or a polite enquiry often resulted in permission to look round. Unfortunately while I collected heaps of numbers I took very few photos and now I discover that many of the sheds I visited are no more - I could never have imagined life without Cardiff Canton, Stratford, March or Finsbury Park and I now see that Old Oak Common is doomed as well.

Are there any decent books out there covering diesel depots of the 70s/80s? There seem to be a lot of publications on steam sheds but not on diesel sheds and it seems a shame that some of these places should fade into obscurity undocumented.

OPC did a series in the 80's called Diesel & Electrics on shed - one book for each region. Most pics were late 70s/early 80's

I have a series of books covering all 5 regions looking at sheds and stabling points.Im not sure if they cover every location but a quick look this morning seems to show most places I remember visiting in the 70s.
The books are titled Diesels and Electrics on Shed by Rex Kennedy Vols 1 to 5.Published by Oxford Publishing Company. The Southern Region one(Volume 5) isbn number is ISBN 0-86093-044-0.
I got them back in the 80s when they came out.You might get them at preseerved railways,e-bay or secondhand book shops.

'Modern' shed memories? How about 'Deltics far pit' still daubed on the entrance to Leeds Holbeck fuelling point right up the mid/late eighties - if not later! I very much doubt a Deltic visited Holbeck after autumn 1981.

I sold all five on ebay for £25 about a year ago as a result of a partner-enforced clearout.

Keep an eye on ebay, because someone else might be subject to the "all those books just gathering dust" rant as we speak...

I have resisted that so far!!! I moved from a 3-bedroom house in the Midlands to a bungalow in Yetminster, Dorset so you can imagine space was at a premium.I have all my books in 2 creaking bookcases as I used to buy as many books as I could afford so now have a decent collection.
Good luck with your search for the books.

Yes I'm probably not going to be too popular if I start accumulating books right now! I'm not sure what is bigger, my railway collection or my wife's array of cookery books. "At least the cookery books are useful" she says!
