Hi .I work in C&W at Llangollen and we`ve been doing a lot of lighting maintanance on the coaches and have used a considerall amount of bulbs . But when we tried to ordered new ones from our usual supplier, were told they no longer make the bulbs . Can anyone give us a company to supply these . thanks .

    Welcome on board !

I should imagine there are several other restorers in the same position. Would these restorers be of any help?

[-X Shouldn't we refer to them as lamps? Any gardener out there might want to plant bulbs.

    Bulb is the modern slang.

    Re: LAMPS

[-X And this is the fundemental problem with our native tongue being corrupted with such slang creeping in. Later Mk1s were not fitted with florescent bulbs. And you'd certainly not want to plant them. :-k

    Re: LAMPS

Bulb in this context is short for light bulb, a reference to its original shape and not wrong, IMHO. A lamp is the complete fitment, whether it is illuminated by a light bulb, a candle, a wick or whatever. Modern term is luminaire, which includes a lot more than just lamps.

And on that note we should both confess to slipping into the land of pedantry!

Hi All. Thanks for your comments and help . Will give the names to the people in the office and see how long it takes them to get back with an order and let you know the outcome .
Nice to know there`s help available ,with such good humour and educational content thrown in. I should have stated light bulbs ,but the state of some coaches, perhaps plant would have been more apropriate .On the subject of slang ,being a Cockney Geezer i dont know much better .

Thats what I was thinking, if we had the spec or part number then i know somewhere that deals solely in LED bulbs for 12V 24V 240V

Yep I confess that I would like to see LED technology in use, but just at this moment in time I don't think that LEDs are commerically up to the sort of lighting levels that we require.

That said if you want cheap low energy lamps check out Asda's as they where doing them for less that 10p each last week I think they where for 230/240 volt suply only but I do here that there is someone selling them on Ebay for 12 and 24volt systems, if you can put up with these then I think we could be on to a winner, they do some really small ones now.

The LMSCA at Wirksworth are in the process of fitting LED lighting to an LMS carrige there. I am told that due to lower energy consumtion it will be possible to supply the system from a battery and so avoid the need to provide and maintain a dynamo. The carriage will be in service from April so we will see how well it works.
