    Hi

    Following on from a recent discussion about plate frames and bar frames, does anybody know the thickness of the bar frames on Mountaineer??

    Many thanks

    I took a number of pics just before the Alco ran out ticket, but no measurements...however I would estimate the bar frame thickness is either 1 1/4" or 1 1/2". A chance to check up as I think the Alco is promised to be at the 16mm show in Peterborough later this year.

    Regards

    Hi Guys,

    Just had a look in my copy of Narrow Gauge to no mans land by Richard Dunn and the frames of the Vulcan 2-6-2 states the frame was 3 inch in width, I know this is not Mountaineer but I think you will fine they all had the same specification.

    Here are a couple of pics I took, 3" seems a bit too wide to me, I was hoping someone would be able to confirm this. IMG_0270.JPG IMG_0272.JPG

    Hi Peter,

    I see what you mean it looks more like 2 inches, yet my second book on American N G steam locos states 3 inches as well, more to this I think.

    I just could not think where I read about mountaineers visit to the 16mm show, but I see it is now confirmed.

    BTW I found a note i made that an NGG16 frame is 55mm wide, perhaps the Alco is the same ?

    Regards

    Peter

    I think if you see the comments by the pic the frames are those of a Land Rover. The Alco was very much in one piece last week, with no firm plans to do anything at the moment. BTW, I did measure the frames, they are 70mm wide.

    Thanks Pete for the clarification on that, I can only dream of seeing this loco back working be it on the FR/WHR or elsewhere for that matter, I would be interested in contributing to a rebuild fund if one was set up.

    Thanks Pete for this bit of information that is most interesting, in the book it said 3 inchs*(75mm) but I suspect this was the drawing plan and in reality they cut corners a bit, I guess the builders had got this down to a fine art by the time they where building the ALCO 2-6-2T's

    * maybe before machining perhaps?

    Being an American made loco I would doubt the frames would be 70mm as the metric system is not used here. 70mm is 2.7559" so they are more likely to be 2.75" bar with paint making up the difference!
