Well, I tried posting a sensible comment, but no one seems interested, so might as well go with the flow.

People would concentrate on the overhaul. However the information that the frames have passed the inspection hurdle leaks out in Steam Railway magazine. And from the NRM there is, or was, nothing. Updates on progress from the museum were rather slow in appearing in the past. They were not particularly frequent either. So if the job is being done WCR style fine. But if this is so then there should be no leaks. I do not understand quite why the NRM cannot get a grip and decide whether or not to pass on information about progress or otherwise and equally decide on the channels of dissemination.
An update on events of the previous week posted each weekend would keep them in control, the interested satisfied, and the press from speculating and indeed appearing to be ahead in the game.

At the moment there is no recent news about the overhaul in the public domain.

    In the circumstances, we can:

    1) Speculate
    2) Waffle

Waffle has the advantage of being more entertaining and less likely to start rumours that take on the status of facts when they are far from it. So in the absence of any official word from the NRM or the contractor, waffle is probably less damaging than speculation. I'm sure normal service will be resumed as soon as there is an official update.

It should be noted that the consultants are Engineers, hired by the NRM for their engineering expertise. Why does the NRM need to consult external engineers? The answer according to Bob Meanley's 2012 report is that "The NRM engineering organisation was inadequate for the scale of the work or for supporting the formal contract management structure."

I don't know how much the consultants have been paid but if they have helped the NRM to get over their previous problems; and helped to convince the non-engineering parts of the NRM and Science Museum's management that the project was worth continuing then it will be money well spent.

So you finish up with a thread devoted to mere waffle, the serious people wanting genuine information stop wasting their time looking at it, so when some real information is published, it isn't noticed?

Perhaps there should be a section devoted only to (allegedly) humourous comments?

That could be a good suggestion. Another discussion board that I frequent on and off, the Mudcat Cafe http://www.mudcat.org/ has a dividing line partway down the home page, and below that is the "BS" (standing for "bullshit") section.

I see this place as like a series of overlapping conversations in a pub. Sometimes serious conversations become jovial; sometimes jovial ones become serious. People drift from one conversation to another, according to their interest and how much they get on with the other participants. But you can't legislate for what the tone of a conversation is: all you can do is influence it by your own tone of voice within the mass of other voices. At the moment there is nothing to be said about FS; but I am sure that as soon as there is something serious worth reporting, I defy anyone on the forum who has a genuine interest to miss it - the post count will see to that.

Still, if it helps: http://www.national-preservation.co...bate-waffle-thread-ex-flying-scotsman.182934/ I don't suppose it will, though...

And your post adds so much to our knowledge of 4472's overhaul progress. Seem's some people are only against bullshit when it's someone else's.

Farrow and Ball do one called 'Dead Salmon,' so they might be worth contacting for quotes on special batches of bloody stupid colours.

Nope, I don't know, so I don't say anything. I look on here in the hope of learning something, but obviously I'm doomed to failure.

But why would anyone seeking authoritive serious information on the 'Scotsman overhaul be looking on this forum in the first place?

Any official updates on progress are published on the National Railway Musuem's own website. As far as I'm aware there aren't any official posts or updates from the NRM here (the 'updates' on the NRM section of the forum generally being automatic reposts from an RSS feed from the NRM's own blog, not an original post by a logged in individual), so anything you read is going to be at least second hand, possibly rumour, and quite likely speculation. Ian Riley doesn't frequent the forum any longer, so no chance of sneaky updates from that direction, and whilst Anthony Coulls may occasionally post as a private individual, it will be noted that he doesn't give progress reports on any and every scheme his employer is currently undertaking.

Even when snippets of information originating from reliable authoritive sources is posted, the natural reaction of others is to discount/rubbish/ignore the information because it hasn't come direct from the keyboard of the NRM - so what's the point when the museum doesn't wish to partake here themselves?

As we all know, the NRM have not issued any recent press releases about 4472. The latest Steam Railway, however, has a short story about the state of the frame plates now that the cylinders have been removed. I wonder where they got the information from? Or have I been dreaming?
