The ELR does have dual braked Mk 1s. Having said that, the trains this weekend are vac. However, Scotsman is an air braked engine, the loco brakes are air, like a dual braked diesel loco. When running in vac, this is proportionally controlled from the air train pipe.

excellent coverage today on the media!

i have watched the media coverage and youtube clips carefully, and Flying Scotsman is obviously being used very gently. very few instances of the regulator being even partially opened , and the reverser wound back to the coasting position.

the Black5 isnt there just for the braking!

no doubt we will here more in the next few days, and i must congratulate Ian Riley and his team on an amazing job.

    cheers,
    julian

I thought much the same last Saturday when I enjoyed a return trip from Heywood to Rawtenstall behind that fine loco, the Crab. I'm glad I'm back up north and can watch the events from afar.

Me too. I have ridden behind FS in 1967 (pic at St Pancras) and 2000 (poor quality still from video when leaving So'ton on a trip that was supposed to be to see the Tall Ships but got as there after most of them had already sailed).

I'll wait until she's booked for a trip that ticks enough other boxes for me.

Even though it's less than an hours drive for me, I'm still undecided. Wait and see how tomorrow plays out first I think.

Everywhere is a 6 hour drive from me... The first time I ever saw scotsman in steam was when it was in BR green livery at Paignton in the early 90s - absolutely made up that its going mainline with this paintwork! I've had approval from the financial management that our second ever steam trip will be with scotsman this year (she said she rather liked it on the news earlier!!!)

Until about 8pm when I had a couple of beers I was still considering getting up at 4am to drive to Bury to see her in steam. I think there is something wrong with me...

I & a mate enjoyed a VERY good one way trip behind the Crab at the MHR's autumn gala on the freight, riding in the the BV - the one & only privilege of being part of the wagon group! ;) :)

God that thing has a bark working up the bank & that's from the arse end! :D

I understand that FS is possible going to Carnforth on the 19th for a loaded test run on the 20th and will then probably stay there and come back to Man Vic with the stock on the 23rd.

Was pleased to see Ian Riley getting air time on the ITV news coverage that was actually rather good. He doesn't seem to seek the spotlight when out and about but in this particular instance, it is good that the media brought him forward as he deserves massive credit, together with his staff, of course, for bringing FS to where it is now.

As for the activities of FS on the main line, I will also wait my time to travel again behind the loco. The various trips she ran in the late 1960s took me to many places and across routes that no longer exist and the "Mystery" Tours were just that with the route itinerary and timings handed out on the day. Even without the help of Real Time Trains, it usually didn't take too long to work out where we were going though.

Of course, we will not get the performances in 2016 onwards that we had when she was let loose in the 1960s. There was, for example, her dash down Stoke when she averaged 89 between Little Bytham and Helpston with a max of 93 before Essendine. This was really for the honour of the LNER as earlier in the day on the same train 35026 had averaged 87 over an equivalent distance north of York with a max of 90. (SR enthusiasts were respectfully silent at the time about the fact that FS achieved her speed downhill whereas Lamport and Holt Line managed it on the flat and with a crew who were driving her on too short a cut-off!). But neither will we get some of the more interesting interludes with FS like on The Michelangelo Tour in 1967. Returning home after a late start from Chesterfield we had a miserable run back with multiple tsrs and signal checks. We finally sat for an hour just south of Bedford while FS went away to find water. The return into St Pancras was at nearly 1 am.

So a mix of memories of 60103/4472 - most of them good. It will be good therefore to meet up again at some point in 2016 after all the initial excitement has died down a bit.

I suspect that the excitement level will not be allowed to fall too much ! The costs of the overhaul will be recouped through marketing and - whilst bums on seats will be charged a premium for the privilege - the sales of related products will be the game changer. When one considers that Eddie Stobart reckoned - albeit a few years ago - that Stobart-Spotters were buying goods that raised a £1 million addition to his company profits then the NRM will be looking to replicate sort of income.

Marketing depends on hype hence I think any hopes that the "initial excitement" will be allowed to "die down a bit" will conflict with the marketing aspirations and the hype will continue as long as 4472 / 60103 is operational; in fact I think "Flying Scotsman" may become the next "Thomas the Tank" albeit without the "friendly" face !

I remember being sick of the sight of FS way back when and I'm already getting a feeling of deja vu. Not the fault of a wonderful machine, just over-exposure.

Anyone referring to it as "a train" or as "the Flying Scot" will be tarred and feathered.
