Have just recently seen the RAIB report on the Hanson SW switcher runaway in October -- does anyone know if they are rebuilding the unit -- new to forum so may have been discussed previously .

I don't know the answer to this question.

If anyone on this forum does and would like to PM me I'd be all ears - with preservation prospects in mind.

I think the RAIB report suggests they are, i believe it says something about mods being made to the damaged one as well as a similar loco at a nearby site.

I spoke to a colleague who has railway business contacts with the Mendip Quarries. The Hanson GM switcher is being rebuilt for future use and already has an additional emergency air brake valve fitted in the cab as suggested by RAIB.

The other GM switcher mentioned by RAIB is the SW1001 owned by Foster Yeoman at Merehead Quarry.

(Sorry Athelney, you can't sell those redundant SW1200's at Port Coquitlam yard...)

Typing about Hanson locos, any idea where and when it hit an 08 recently? 59104 is expected at Eastleigh works tonight or tomorrow for repairs.

    Cheers, Neil

Thanks for the info Romsey - glad its still going to be running again - as regards the redundant loco's in Port Coquitlam , was thinking of the many ex lease SD40-2's that are stored there, maybe DB could use them in the UK !

Unfortunately SD40's won't fit our loading gauge even after the W10 clearance work for 9' 6" boxes on standard deck height flats..... we've got more chance of spare DB hydraulics in view of the new management at Doncaster.

I was hoping for some ex-Cartier M636's too, as DB have allegedly got a paw in there.

    Shame....

If I had any M636's in my back yard I think that would make me a very popular fellow with the railfan community over here !

But not in Eastleigh works - it would be out of gauge by rail and too heavy to go over Cambell Road bridge into the works. There are all sorts of engineering companies in Barton Park estate - the old carriage works to the east of Eastleigh Yard.

So does this indicate we have a secret EMD dealer in Barton Park Estates ? with connections to London Ont -- the possibilities unfold -------

Are you trying to start a conspiracy theory here?

Close to Eastleigh DB Schenker Depot, quite close to FL depot at Southampton MCT and the stone companies 59's come to Eastleigh for unscheduled repairs.

It all adds up and is much too sensible for this country nowadays.

I'm sure that even in my limited 'time' i've seen heavier things go over that bridge.
The old chap recalls that during the glory days, the brickwork was displayed on a weekly basis by lorries going in and out of Campbell road #-o

It was a bit tight getting 850's boiler over the bridge even with a trailer fitted with steerable axles. Some of the brichwork has been replaced over the last few years and the steelwork of the bridge sides has been reinforced at the town end of the bridge.

There are no weight limitation signs over Cambell Road bridge that I can remember. I would guess that a SW1001 switcher weighs about 80 tons, so would count as an abnormal road movement and require permission from Network Rail bridge engineers to pass over the bridge. (Or any other road over rail bridge.)

Did find on someones personal website a few pictures of the loco inside a modern looking building , just sitting on a panel of track , cab was being worked on so she must be hiding locally .
