There are/were smokebox plates from a Standard 4 2-6-4 and a Black 5 at an 'antiques' shop near Chester, I believe that the owner acquired them from Chester shed when the locos were withdrawn.

This seems the best place to put this. Sometime ago I was told by a friend that he made a visit to Barry Island some years ago back in the late 60s and he found a pannier tank brass loco number plate on the ground amongst the under growth. I’m very surprised that any loco would be sent to a scrap yard with a number plate still attached. Could this be true or is he winding me up?

Plenty of the locos that went to Woodhams still had their cabside plates on ... they didn't stay on for very long mind you!

Panniers didn't have brass numberplates, as a rule. Might have been a cast iron one, painted up. The Granges that went into the dockside warehouse, as part of the 'strategic reserve', all had brass numberplates, but had their nameplates removed.....

I wonder what happened to Valour's namplate that was stolen from a memorial that it was fastened to after the loco was withdrawn?

Bumping this thread up a bit, but I was quite surprised to find a 'West Country' class nameplate and replica shield from 34018 'Axminster' on display 'somewhere in Yorkshire' recently. Probably my favourite WC class name.
