Isn't smell reckoned to be the dominant canine sense? If that's right, bearing in mind how they say 'hello' to each other .... how far do you want to explore possible motives in doggie decision making?

Re: "the discernable shades of green thing" I think I recall something along those lines too, but trying to confirm it just now, couldn't find anything to support it ..... although I can now categorically state, that a bee couldn't tell the difference between Furness Railway or Isle of Wight Railway liveries (unless they've got a better handle on lining out than any published studies, to date, have indicated).

Research also shows that humans can distinguish somewhere between 20,000* and 20,000,000** individual shades of colour, according to sources and levels of light .... and whose answer you choose to believe.

    * All right .... name them
** I'm still betting you couldn't name - not number - 20,000 before running out of eponyms. And you thought 328 'Halls' got tedious!

Being significant departures from standard livery, weren't the grouping era colours of east and west coast crack expresses in reality more properly identified a specific "brand identity"? As mentioned, the original HST has been an worthy continuation of that tradition. Certain of the better more modern liveries actually sit rather well on them IMO.

There's a case to be made that, whilst livery, like naming policy, scarcely affects the actual performance of a loco or it's train, the plethora of modern day colour schemes merely brings passenger trains into line with the multitude of 'house liveries' sported by privately owned freight stock since the dawn of the railway era.

I'd certainly agree with Tim over several of the appalling aesthetic monstrosities foisted on today's passengers. Frankly, some of the more creative and competently executed graffiti I've seen is a marked improvement on some of the base commercialism which passes for livery (on buses too) these days. Mind you, examine many photos of pre-grouping stations, where the sheer clutter of advertising compared with even today was an assault on the eyes.

Not really a new phenomenon. Not since the late 1960s, anyway.

Didn’t dislike the blue personally. Infinitely better than the awful scrawling found on the modern railway

BR Green era ... you mean green diesels? Some lovely styling and complementary liveries, e.g. Deltics, hymeks. And some aesthetic disasters e.g. Co-Bos, NBL type 2s.

Can't really argue about BR blue. It wasn't really a style. More a lack of style.

    Its interesting,

My wife is a graphic designer and designs all kind of materials for an educational establishment, she is vaguely interested in the way trains look as a consequence of my general interest.

She has remarked to me before how 'simple and classy' a lot of the historic stock and locomotives look, and has questioned who on earth would authorise such poor design as seen on modern day stock (and buses!)

Brighton, as you might expect, has a decent approach to keeping it's bus fleet looking respectable. Here (and defending myself from charges of going off topic, kindly note the name!), is B&H fleet no.620, sporting current standard livery:

In a book I read about the SECR in the days of Harry Wainright, it said that before an item of rolling stock was built, he would have the design drawn out on a wall - full size - in coloured chalk of the correct colours, then he'd stand a fair way off so that he could see just how it would appear when built. Any alterations to the livery were done at that stage.

I'd bet on not being the only one who could think of a few less than aesthetically triumphant designs down the years which could've benefitted from such an approach .....

I spoke to a couple of friends on Friday ... not railway enthusiasts. They had watched the NYMR shows and had also spotted a number of blatant continuity errors. "They must think we can't tell, but we can. We're not stupid.". So some of that 99.9% can see what we see.

They weren’t averse to painting the full size things as a trial either if required, which explains why P class 323 spent the first few weeks of its life painted red...

I'm trying to visualise it ....... was it "red" red, or "matches SECR carriage stock" red?

The fact they are watching the program, is what the NYMR probably did it for, as for the comment about the continuity, who cares, they are obviously in the "pedantic minority" with nothing else to worry about.

In my view the producers are to be applauded for doing a great job, with the resources to hand, they have already apologised for it, move on.....

So far the NYMR has been delighted with the series. The GM does regret allowing the "have you ever been called the Fat Controller?" bit in episode 1 though. We've ribbed him mercilessly over it. :)

Don't need worry, he is. He's had s wry smile though over how every "emergency" on the railway is depicted as a "surprise" to all concerned. But it makes for good tv as far as the target audience is concerned so I'm told.

You can call me pedantic if you like, but mind what you say about my friends. They are neither pedantic nor railway enthusiasts. They are just normal people who love the NYMR and are surprised that the programme was so badly put together.

You can defend them as much as you like, and I will acknowledge that the programme is good publicity, but the fact remains that it's an amateurish production full of blatant errors and deliberate over-dramatization.

Haha, you bash on then, maybe take it up with the production company then, I am sure they will file your "complaint", in the vertical file!!!!
