You didn't get hydraulics that far north did you? Joking aside my Mum remembers the 'red diesels' from her childhood in West Bromwich in the 1960's
When my parents moved to Bewdley about 5 years ago my Mum was happy when 821 1015 or 1062 (all in red) went past the bottom of street because it reminded her of her youth.

Only the Scottish built Warships on their way to the WR. 'Cleared' most of them (and all the Westerns) on spotting trips to London and the WR though :)

Warships were regular visitors to Crewe in the early 1960s working Penzance / Plymouth services to Liverpool /Manchester; these changed traction at Crewe hence their regular appearance. The introduction of Class 52s (Westerns) and 47 (Brush in parallel) saw the Class 47s take over many of these services whilst the Westerns and the Warships were increasingly confined within the Western Region boundaries.

    Looks fine to me. :D
I'm surprised that even the Go When Ready called a ballast train a Class 1. [1 Foxtrot 58]

Not being an expert, and especially not knowing any numbers, I always have to look up what locos are being talked about, usually on “Preserved British Steam Locomotives”. Anyway, looking at the LMS section to try to understand the great red loco debate I noticed this, for 42700 5MT Horwich Crab:

“In the 1970s consideration was given to restoring 42700 to the original livery of crimson lake with its original number 13000. However, detail modifications made subsequently, most particularly the removal of the brakes on the leading pony truck and a change in the cylinder cladding would have made this invalid, and the engine was restored in black.”

Is that the general level of authenticity (sounds like nothing visible above platform level!) that the more exacting here require or is that taking purism to extremes? If you applied the 100% authentic, unaltered condition test to all LMS preserved locos, just how many would be permitted to be red (maroon, crimson ...)?

The Crabs, apart from the Lenz gear to five of them, received few modifications through their lives: running steps, sanding to the intermediate coupled wheels, one or two cylinder relief valves, AWS, coal rails on tender, tank vent position moved. All small, and while I know the class quite well I can't think of anything major which altered their appearance. I prefer an 'authentic' livery, but you have to draw a line somewhere. 2968 will reappear as 13268, and there will be a few modifications, some carried out by the LMS or BR since she carried that number in service, but some in preservation to ease operation in today's climes. We will make her look as original as we can, but the really knowledgeable will find differences (hint: how many realise that she hasn't carried a steam lance cock in preservation?).

Looking at that photo, it seems to me to be double exposed. I'm sure I can see the ghost of something like a class 47 overlaying the Western. Note the double arrow logo on the cab side and work outwards from that.

Your eyesight is good - but not that good as I see a Hymek; note the flat front to the right of the leading Western cab and the curved roofline in the left hand cab front window. Now cue posts on "yes it is" / "No it's not" ! :Googleit:

    Well spotted Steve.
It was a screen grab from a video/slideshow I did of the ‘Westerns, and I must have caught it during the transition to the next slide.
The next slide was not a 47 or a Hymek. It was another Western.
I have amended the picture in my original post
    Dave.

Thanks - but I see what you mean about the paintwork! It reminds me of that advert (for what I can't remember) where the Dad looks out of the window at his "helpful" young son cleaning the car - with a kitchen scouring pad...

I think that was a one off for the Royal Train, can't remember the year though
