Have just watched a fascinating short docublog thingy about an Austro-Hungarian naval Monitor class of ship designed for shallow river use, the SMS Leitha. Long story short, built in the 1870's and did see a bit of action, she was gradually modified in various ways until finally decomissioned after WW1, but her hull was kept in use for various rivery things until, I think, the 1980's. She was then restored/rebuilt to her original design, including her propulsion system which was powered by a locomotive boiler and firebox. This was used in preference to a marine steam set-up due to weight restrictions of her very shallow draught, about 3'6" I think.
Sorry not clever enough to post a link but found on youtube titled SMS Leitha/Lajta by a chap called Drakinfel

The Australian Murray River paddle steamers are powered by what is basically a traction engine geared to the shaft while the ships on the Franklin expedition, Erebus & Terror had auxiliary steam engines that were converted railway locomotives
