Having carried out a little more research it would seem:-

"The GWR Roundel or Shirtbutton monogram was used on GWR locos and rolling stock during the period 1934-1942. On locos it was in gilt with a black outline, positioned in the center of the tank or tender sides. Unfortunately it was so small as to be insignificant in these locations, often disappearing entirely when wheathering set in".
    From http://www.gwr.org.uk/Liveriesbutton.html

With the GWS's stock of original loco roundels now exhausted, our next option is to try Fox Transfers http://www.fox-transfers.co.uk/products.cgi?categoryid=120&ordernumber=868610751888. However, from the pictures on their site, it appears the transfers do not have the black edging. So the saga continues! We may have to end up sign writing it!!

I believe the 48 uses a pair of Fox's roundels. They have the black edge, although I don't know if this was added later. They've tarnished quite badly though.

If my memory's right, the Manor's was completely sign written. I think the gold was sprayed on, which has given it a very even finish, although there's some slight tarnishing now.

You might want to speak to Mr Speller. In the light of experience, he recommends using gold leaf, which not only has the benefit of no tarnishing, but is also a good deal cheaper than you'd expect. I seem to recall the price difference being not much more than a pair of Fox's. This was the method he used on 9002.

For liveries, your best reference is 'Great Western Way' by J. Slinn, published by HMRS. It's been out of print for sometime now, but I believe an updated version is due out soon.

    3650 Official launch June 13th & 14th 2009

The repaint of 3650 into 1939 green with GWR roundel's is nearly complete. The roundel's were applied over the Easter period in gold leaf and
all that remains is to apply a few coats of varnish over the coming weeks.

Although there will probably be a couple of steamings before hand, 3650 will be officially launched over the weekend of 13th & 14th June.
Even though it's not a published steam day, the Railway Centre at Didcot will be open for the weekend as normal, but we hope to include a coach that will be available for public rides while 3650 is operating on the main demonstration line during the launch.

Please check www.3650.co.uk "latest news" for further info, or even www.didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk as it gets closer to the launch date.

So far 3650 has not ventured outside of the works at Didcot as the new paint has yet to be varnished, but there are a couple of 300 x 200 photo's on the 3650 website of the repaint and roundel being applied.

As time has moved on since the start of the restoration some 20 years ago, we have lost touch with a couple of the group members from the early days. Any of you that read this, please PM me and re-new your acquaintance with 3650 and the rest of the group for the launch party.

The front of the tanks are black.
The only livery compromise we have made is the position of the blue route/power disc. As built, it would have been higher up on the cab side, but as 3650 now has top feed, we have adopted the later 8" above the numberplate position.

I will no doubt be setting up the bar, but should really be working on the 72 during the day. as it is our work weekend As to the beers, we will have to go and do some research and try a few, just to check that they are OK you understand.

What an awesome result! I know panniers seem mundane when compared to some other locos in the GWR fleet but to me they epitomise so much of the old GWR and they just seem to fit in anywhere on "modern" heritage lines too. Although I think you did very much the right thing to paint your loco in its industrial livery first (you got my attention and many others too) I believe 3650's current livery and condition bear real testament to your hard work. Congratulations to you all in the 3650 group for a job well done!

Congratulations from the original 3738 restoration team. Warwick and I would look in awe at 3650 in the period 74-77 when she was parked behind the lifting shop. It was a great help (second only to Peter G) in understanding how 8750 panniers were put together and how to restore one. I seem to remember the inner firebox and the axle boxes were always good for a "I'm glad we don't have to deal with those" conversation. For what it is worth, I think you have picked the best livery and I do know that only those who either do the job or pay for it get a vote!

    Once again, congratulations

Blimey! That takes me back! How long did 3650 stay at Hereford for? IIRC the loco was placed in the care of Bulmers and there was a branch of the GWS that was going to restore the loco and look after KGV. It was after 3650 was transferred to Didcot that the 6000 Locomotive Association was formed.
