Has any the spuds been at the mainline junction as this is shaped like Salisbury. I hope they are still allowed to soon.

I presume you are referring to SPADS (Signals Passed At Danger) rather than spuds (sic). So far as I'm aware there have been no incidents of SPADS since Worgret Junction was remodelled into the current single lead arrangement many, many years ago. Incidentally, I believe this is the second time you have likened Worgret Junction with the junction near Salisbury recently in the news. In my view, the similarities with the track layout and gradients at Salisbury are sufficiently different as to make a side-on collision highly improbable, if not impossible, at Worgret. Therefore I believe you can stop your worrying about it being shaped like Salisbury and feel you need never raise the subject again.
Agreed, but I think City of truro fan is referring to the future proposed 90 day trial running.

Isn't Worgret Junction paired with a trap point to divert/derail any out of control rolling stock away from the main line?

Correct. Plus you'd be 'running away' up a rising gradient from the distant signal and limit of SR operations.

I’m hoping none of it will slow down more mainline trains from running so this is good. It will be that swanage station is in danger of the driver doing a spads more as I have been looking into where the signals are and if the shed signal gets missed on the way in there is not enother one to stop them going in the buffers unless someone at the station can put out a red flag. The danger is that it’s a road at the end to go out into.

I don't really think it's the sort of subject to be speculating on to any extent, let alone that extent.

All of the drivers know exactly where every signal is so you have no worries there, in fact after 19 and 25 to the main there is one more stop signal, on the buffers themselves.

A worthwhile exercise in many ways. Not a Swanage specific comment, but it's amusing how many loco crews grab the wrong vacuum hose when rescuing a DMU!

What would happen if a failure occurred on the mainline? The 08 isn’t mainline registered is it? Would the 33 or possibly bubble car be sent in instead? The third rail would complicate matters.

A very interesting point, D6515 currently still in Eastleigh Works under cosmetic repair is the only suitable and NR registered loco that is allowed out on the main line as a Thunderbird rescue loco.
Another thought, would D6515 have to be on standby at Corfe fully crewed, each time the DMMU's work to Wareham?

In the event of a failure on the Worgret Jn Wareham section, which I would have thought highly unlikely, given that the class 117 has two engines, Both lines would have to be blocked and traction current discharged from the third rail.

Which is one of the main reasons that DMUs were chosen over loco hauled trains

I'm sure there will be a mutually agreed plan for this. They might even do a rehearsal if they can find a time with buses west of Wareham but the line open to Worget.

Given the amount of smoke coming from the exhaust of one of the engines of the DMU last Sunday morning I think breakdowns may not be uncommon. How much did it cost to restore these units?

I believe about £1.3M of which £1M was a Dorset County Council grant.

I understand a very significant impairment charge has been taken in the accounts to reflect a more realistic valuation of the DMUs.

I've no idea what the plan is but the Railway will be required to have an emergency plan and this will be one of the many things covered. It's quite possible that the 08 would be allowed in an emergency.

In BR days DMMU engines always "smoked" when starting away from stations, especially when cold!

Surely a 3 car unit has two driving motor vehicles and one trailer. That would mean four engines.

Indeed. Add the bubble car to the formation and you have even more engines. Something would have to go very wrong for the unit to totally fail.
