Planning my trip, which will principally be to NYMR... On the way back south it occurs to me there is a huge concentration of railways, How feasible would it be to visit all of the following over several days? I have never been to any and don't know the geography... would there be an obvious order to tackle them? Is there any I have missed?
    Foxfield
    Battlefield
    GCR
    Barrow Hill
    Butterley
    Peak
    Ecclesbourne
    Churnet Valley
    Crich

Acccomodation and transport is not a problem.

The Foxfield and Churnet Valley are quite close to each other as are Ecclesbourne Valley, Peak Rail, Crich and (a little further off) Butterley. GCR (GCR(N)?) and Battlefield are both within an hour of Leicester.
If you are starting out from the NYMR, then first stop could be Barrow Hill, then Churnet/Foxfield followed by EVR/PR/Crich/Butterley, finishing off with the GCR(N)/GCR/Battlefield. At least a week to do them all properly I would think, and that depends on what days they operate.

(as a side note I am looking forward to pictures of the Vintage Camper out and about again...)
No clues about the routing or order...

AutoRoute has a route optimisation facility, enter all the locations, plus start and finish, and it will give you the optimum shortest route...

I suspect the problem will be less about geography and more about working around the various opening times and dates

I should have mentioned my interests include canals and buses, so if there was anywhere in that sort of area worth visiting I could maybe include that in my itinery

High peak junction of the cromford canal is good for a quick nose about, pretty close to EVR, Crich, and peak rail

I shall have to bring a decent map with me! Good info, thanks guys

  11. You could look one destination up on Google maps, then hit Directions, put all the others in and drag the routes about to your heart's content.

Don't miss the beautiful Caldon Canal which runs parallel to the CVR. Consal is particularly scenic with the Black Lion pub for lunch too.

Chasewater is in the general vicinity of Churnet Valley/Foxfield/Battlefield line. If you wish to include narrow gauge you can add Steeple Grange ( very close to EVR, Crich and Peak Rail); Amerton and Apedale in proximity to the Staffordshire lines.

Added Chasewater to my list, I might have to pass on the smaller ng lines unless I happen to see a sign...I'll keep them in mind though \thanks

Try www.heritage-railways.com for links to the various heritage railways' websites. Many are open all week during school holidays, even half-terms, so if you can arrange your week to coincide with those, you'd have a better chance of finding them open.

Thanks. I might have to reschedule to June when I'd hope for more opening days and do a shorter trip "down south" in April

It's surprising how many railways don't run during the week during high season.

I wonder how many casual visitors turn up and are disappointed.
