As that's a closed group I'm curious, what was the loco suggested by Stuart?

Peckett 1555, currently running as ‘Ivor the Engine’, but I believe it's boiler ticket expired at the beginning of the year and is now awaiting overhaul. Asking price is 35K (which some have suggested is high for a small industrial in that condition).

Is there currently a shortage of small working locomotives in the UK?
I had been under the impression that there was a shortage of medium/medium large locomotives but that there are quite a lot of smaller locomotives about and operational?

There is a shortage of everything. The days of just throwing money at an engine, whether it was needed for traffic or not, are gone. Many railways are running with little or no spare capacity in steam terms.

Rumour has it that it has not yet solved the loco shortage at Telford.
