Having read some of the rumours and half truths that appear to pop up all over the place on here, I wondered whether it would be useful to have a single thread where such matters could be drawn together, thus below is my interpretation, entirely off the top of my head, based on the various posts elsewhere, I know its not going to be correct but at least can provide a starting point which people can correct as appropriate, plus I have no doubt missed stuff and even locomotives.

48151 - Its been suggested that she is soon to go out of ticket, I am sure she has been overhauled fairly recently?
46115 - Under overhaul, return date unclear?
45699 - Being retubed, return date unclear, apparently has a very leaky tender?;)
45690 - No idea really, seems to have become a bit of a bridesmaid engine not getting much work, presently running with 44932's tender whilst hers gets bottom end overhaul?
44932 - Seems to have been 'under overhaul for years', not sure why they actually need a working 5 as most WCRC work needing such motive power goes to the closely aligned Rileys triplets.
44767 - Has the scale 1:1 kit of parts even reached Carnforth yet, see comment above re 5's, although I do recollect some suggestion that she is stronger than a standard black 5.
6201 - Not sure what relationship is but has been tested and one would assume will be back shortly.
34067 - Seems to have been 'under overhaul for years', she was a problem child during her last stint so maybe not high priority?
34073 - Her frames are visible from mainline when certain stock is out, doesn't seem to be any work although I wonder whether boiler might appear on 34067 or 34016 at some stage.
34016 - Seems to have been 'under overhaul since 2014?
35018 - Doing great stuff, due to go down south to runs some trains shortly, the ideas of the duration of the visit seems to vary between a few weeks and centuries. ;)
62005 - Boiler just been fitted, assume she will be in Scotland again in 2019.
61306 - Recently overhauled and hauling SD stuff darn south.
5972 - Assume she will be staying at Harry Potter world for the foreseeable, probably little point in bringing her back to main line as Halls don't seem to fit anywhere anymore.

Note I have used 'allocation' as I know they are not all WCRC owned but seem to be allocated there.

Actually reading all that back makes you realise just how much we have to thank Mr Smith and WCRC for.....

Just so you know someone is reading this (good idea btw) I assume '63106' was intended to be 61306?

From memory, 44767's kit of parts did arrive at Carnforth a while since...
44932 was acquired from Midland Railway - Butterley, and as far as I remember, there were issues with the quality and standard of the air braking system then in the process of being fitted.

Of the others, I know not.

    Richard.

48151 did a test round the circuit 18th March 2010. I guess that is when it last came out from overhaul and any other work since then has been retube or similar for extension to same ticket.

Some of those loco's aren't the right colour though! Joking aside I don't think you can knock West Coast, they've done a lot of good work over the past 20 years or so fair play to them.

Surley if 45699 is or has had her boiler retubed then that should mean work on the tender tank still required are ongoing were the wheelsets ok on 45699 also its mainline ticket expires a year before 45690 in 2020 and leander 2021 so galatea when overhaul completed would it receive a extension on its boiler ticket?

    44767 kit arrived Nov/|Dec 2018.
    34016 stored I believe-overhaul yet to commence.
48151 boiler certificate supposedly expired about 10 days before its SSE season finished (2016 ?) ,which would tie in with a March 2010 test run .Whether it then got a new certificate or an extention I don't know.
5972 I cannot see moving unless the place closes.

Having turned out 61306 and 6201 in recent months I suspect 46115/34067 will be next.

I think Steam Dreams would give anything for 44932 or 44767 at the moment. With Mayflower having problems, they have had to postpone at least two planned trains because absolutely nothing else is available. True, Black Fives are limited to 60mph and are not the ideal engines if you want to run 12 coach trains, but they are gauge friendly and have a record second to none when it comes to stepping in for failed locos in recent years. With the Riley trio sometimes all needed at Fort William, there would certainly be work for a Carnforth "Five". Indeed, why else would Mr Smith have acquired 44767?

IIRC the latest SR mag stated new speed limits for mainline locos and co-incidentally the B1 is down-rated to 65, whilst Black 5's are similarly uprated to 65? So that would make for like-for-like interchangeability?

this may yet need to spin out into a separate thread however .....

what the list above shows plus the teething problems with 61306 is that we are dealing with vintage machinery that with age has wear and tear and foibles of their own . My presumption (dangerous) was that with the creation of IoS/VT alongside WCRC we would see operations increasingly using their own fleets to the detriment of single engine owners (60007, 6233, 6201, 70013 , 45596 etc) This was mitigated to a degree with 45596 and 6201 signing up with WC, 60007 with IoS and 71000 with VT

all three companies have in theory fleets that could support all their operations however to do so involves a significant amount of money to get the fleets into a condition to allow regular , reliable service and then support crews (who may well be drawn from the ranks of the engineering staff) to manage their trips out on the main line

the conclusion becomes there is a very fine balance between finance, manpower and workshop capacity that drives fleet size and loco availability

Yes, and there is a range of possibilities in between integrated owned/operated (eg 48151) and separately owned/maintained and hired out for operation (eg 6233). Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Leander is separately owned but maintained and operated by WCR , while hasn't 6201 been refurbished and recertified by WCR in return for a couple of years of rights to operate? A variety of commercial arrangements exists, but leaving aside FS, Tornado, and perhaps UoSA in the short term, the way to assure the future is to operate under one of the three umbrellas. Clan Line of course is an interesting different one since they have got their Pullman baseload independently of the TOC they use.
