45690 failed because the regulator has stuck shut. The 37 is here now to take engine and coach back to Carnforth via the mainline.

Normally, after arrival at Carlisle, the loco and support coach would detach fairly soon to run to Upperby. However long they spent trying to get the loco moving, they should have decided by 3-ish that they were likely to need at least one diesel to take the train back to York, and possibly (definitely as it turned out) another one to take the Jubilee back to Carnforth. RTT shows 1Z99 leaving "Steamtown" at 15:25 (which seems reasonable), leaving Carnforth on its way north at 15:51, and scheduled to arrive at 17:22 but not getting there until 19:24. What on earth caused that delay? And why didn't the other rescue diesel leave Hellifield until 17:48, also reaching Carlisle at 19:24?

The 37 arrived at Carlisle at 1720. The rescue diesels couldn't leave Hellifield until there was someone there to drive them.

Surprised we 're not complaining about the LACK of 'box' on the back this time given the unfortunate events at Carlisle LOL

Well, looking on the bright side of an unfortunate failure, better that it was stuck shut rather than open.

True, it's very unlikely that there would be a spare driver at Carnforth, and the driver for the diesel at Hellifield was not required for duty until shortly before the booked arrival time, 18.48 so he could have been anywhere.
You cannot just have spare drivers sitting around waiting just in case, unless of course you want to add the cost of this to the cost of the tour it's never going to happen.
Then there is the time taken to contact NR and get a path organised, and the paperwork completed. I do sometimes despair at the lack of consideration some have for the amount of work involved in a fairly straight forward thing like getting a rescue loco on the move.
