I don't know if this has come up before, but this programme was recommended on a UK Rail Photo Group. It's free and called 'The Photographer's Ephemeris'.

This is a programme for seeing where the sun will be at any time of day in any location in the World. It's the quickest method I've seen for doing this. Great for preparing a trip. I installed it and it works a treat.

At first it looks like it only does sunrise and sunset, but if you play with it, it will tell you the sun position at any time. It views maps in different views, including satellite or maps.

Brilliant really. I think I'll consult it before every trip from now on.

    It's on http://stephentrainor.com/tools/

You'll probably have to download Adobe Air as well for it to work.

Takes a little getting used to but is very helpful for places one hasn't visited before.

That is really good, I like the way you can check the altitude of the sun and see the altitude of anything that might obscure it, although you do have to zoom out a bit for it to be really effective.
Thanks for posting the link. :)
