Yeah it seems to be the April Fool.

Incidentally when Tornado went to Barrow Hill in 2009, the RHDR sent no. 7 Typhoon there as well which was renumbered to 60164 on the cabside.

So in 2020, it will be 60165 Lightning II in stealth paint, and will be finally used by WCRC as linesiders will be unable to detect it! :D:p

Makes you wonder what could really be achieved if there was a ground-up build though. Doesn't it?

If I remember rightly, a big part of the 5-AT's justification was that Network Rail and capacity issues would slowly bite down on steam rail charters, and that a train capable of slotting into the higher speeds demanded increasingly by the network is going to be a necessity.... eventually. I've already seen bits where the pathing given out by NR can't match the simple realities of steam as is, so hearing Tornado approved for higher speeds is great news.

The issue that snarled it all up for the 5AT was that the touring train aspect isn't going to recoup the (then) £10m RnD costs, no solid business plan, no investors.

Or the fireman would sit back and relax, monitoring the fuel feed, burners and water as the 5AT was to be oil fired in order to better take advantage of existing railway infrastructure. Huge parts of the 5AT design seem to crib from DLM 52 8055 which operates over on the Continent hauling the Orient Express, including the more modern looking cab design with doors.

    =============================================

As I didn't realise this thread was about. Any comment or speculation as to what livery the MK3's are going into when the Trust begins to purloin them? I saw teak vinyls and tourist liveries elsewhere, all depends on what looks nice, doesn't it?

According to Mark Allatt's interview with New Build Steam, no decision has been taken yet, but Mark has done some lovely mark ups. Teak "scumbling" would be my preference and would go behind Tornado and the P2, but the blue/blue Coronation livery of the LNER...now that appeals greatly!

My opinion of this idea is partly influenced by the hideous vinyl (?) coating that London Underground applied to their 4TC set. Proper scumbling would be better than that, but it would still be painted metal pretending to be wood, so bogus. Keep the teak appearance for the coaches that really are teak.

Of more interest to some of us is what the Trust will do to allow passengers to hear the locomotive.

So the Thompson steel bodied stock that were scumbled were bogus, then? Not my photo, uplifted from the LNERCA website.

Scumbling is the only way to do it - faux vinyl just doesn't work!

The real beauty is you can do a partial repaint and it doesn't stand out!

The basecoat for the scumble is an eggshell paint, which in the height of summer requires speedy work to maintain a wet edge while applying.

However for the mk3s I think Coronation/West Riding Limited livery would look better.

I agree, they'd probably suit the coach bodies better.

...but I like scumbled stock

That or the LNER's Green and Cream tourist colours. They'd probably be a more aesthetically appealing match with an apple green loco than blue and white, and be a bit more distinct from the typical 1970s Blue and Grey colours that are very similar to the Coronation coaches

To me, yes, that is bogus, because it's metal pretending to be wood -- and not even very convincingly. If some people like it, fair enough, but it's definitely not to my taste.

The mk3 sleeper at Pickering is green and cream and I don't think it wears it well at all.

The Coronation wasn't blue and white but two shades of blue.
