As Ukraine is suffering with a power black-out,
Would it make any sense to send unwanted Diesel-electric locomotives as generators ?
Or is this a silly idea ?

The Ukraine is mostly Russian Gauge so it would not be possible to move them into most of the Country that easily.

On a number of occasions 47's were used to provide power in wait for it power stations, I believe to replace faulty exciters

Ex London vehicles operated in Yugoslavia for many years without any problem and even some Plymouth double-deckers ended up in Warsaw just after the end of WW2 !
Presumably the biggest problem in the Ukraine at the moment is the size of the trolleybus operations (and to a lesser extent, trams) in the Country, which are unable to operate if the electric supply system is being destroyed.

Would sending them paraffin heaters as winter deepens be a better idea? It gets damned cold in Ukraine in winter.

Even though the Ukraine gauge is different, it would surely not be difficult or lengthy to mount the bodies on a crude, purpose-built low-loader - they don't have to be moved by rail?

So assuming they need AC - what else would be needed ?

Most modern traction is 3-phase AC. The issue is that it's not 50 Hz.

I've linked the image because I can't be bothered to rehost it, but in this photo M420W 3502 is on a road, not on track.

I can't help thinking that Ukraine can manage these things on its own without some shonky British locos to help though :Joyful:

Ultimately, why send a box with 66 xxx on the side when you can send a box with Aggreko* on the side. The difference being is that the latter is much more usable.

*Other large generator hire companies are available.

This is a genuine question, to which I don't know the answer - how common are industrial generators with an output equivalent to that of a diesel loco? I cant imagine they are particularly common.

Picking Aggreko as an example, their largest generator in a container appears to be 1200kVA.

I'm interested in the work one company does that seems to take redundant locomotive equipment and turn them into generators - I believe that the IDRS have experience with them.

For simple souls like me, what does a type 4 diesel produce in kVA terms?
