    Fire risk, overnight crew to tend fire not required, maintenance on running gear saving due to no abrasive cinders, oil currently more expensive but the future of the coal supply from nearby Hesperus in doubt.

    As a scientist working in a UK Power Station, I can confirm this is still current practice. A CCGT HRSG unit will be nitrogen capped if expected to be out of work for anything more than a few weeks.

    The famous Durango and Silverton tourist railroad ran its final coal fired service last month, every steam loco now converted to oil firing.
