30120 has spent much of the last few years away from Bodmin on loan and was found to be too underpowered for their services to see regular use, i suspect this was in part down to concerns about its frailty If the reported repair has failed, then there is only one realistic option a new cylinder block casting, if its to remain as a working engine, or return to York as a static exhibit, assuming there is space for it, my hunch is that it may need to be a one engine in, one engine out if it does, so potensially it may lead to another engine from the NRM going on loan, or as i expect an agreement with a preserved railway to take 30120 and for it to be gifted to allow a new owner to replace the worn out parts ,
Someone mensioned the overhaul list at the MHR, it has to be remembered, that the Urie group only work on their own engines, 506, is due to be done next year, and 499 to be done in time for 2020, the Eastleigh preservation society also only work on their own engine, so in theory the Urie loco society could take on 30120 from 2020, without it effecting the rest of the work being done at Ropley.

Maybe so. However there is no sensationalism when they directly quote the Bodmin Railway GM as saying "we felt we had a duty of care to 30120, but now that has been taken from us" and "we feel no animosity towards the NRM or the Swanage Railway"

Martin your obsession with it going to the MHR continues! I'm afraid you'll be disappointed.

Its not an Obsession, Will the Swanage Railway be able to take it on? i dont think they will, they have the N to finish, The U to do, the M7 to overhaul, you have the T3, thats going to need to have funds found to overhaul that, i'm just looking at who would stand the best chance to 1 raise the money to do it, 2 has the best facilities, who would be most likiliest to be able to overhaul it, if that was anyone else, i would be 100 per cent behind that body but equally the NRM might decide to retire it to York depending on what they feel is the best option .

Given that the funding for it has come from a benefactor heavily associated with Bodmin to transfer it away feels a little bit unfortunate

Its going to be load limited over the Alps so as useful to the MHR as it is Bodmin. Battlefield last spring was probably ideal in short relatively easily graded running line and light trains

I think it's most unlikely that the NRM will want to put 120 on display at York, after what they have said about duplication (e.g. too many 4-4-0s), and space needed for improved presentation. If anything they might squeeze it into Shildon.

If 120 is to remain operational then it needs significant investment, and the best route might be for the loco to be gifted to a suitable line with the resources to take it on. I'm not over the moon about the NRM thinning its collection of historic locomotives, but I'd rather see this engine operating on its home ground than gathering dust at Shildon.

Or at least that it being located in York was a criticism!

Martin I feel you are speculating on a problem that's not there at the moment, the T9 is to have an examination to see what's needed (we all know how fragile the cylinder block is) as for the T3, again we still don't know what the plans Swanage have for it. At the moment speculation doesn't help, when there's some news I'm sure we'll hear about it.

Maybe it will end up as one of the Leicester exhibits?

Leicester had a railway museum once. The powers that be obviously didn't want it so it closed.

It took me a while to realise Bodmin referred to the railway and not 34016 here.

In this months SR the Swanage railways GM is quoted as saying they hope to have 30120 back in use by Christmas. So looks like it is repairable.

Will be interesting to see if Swanage get to keep it.

It was in steam for a couple of days last week but I noticed this morning that the van from the specialist company carrying out some of the work was back again.

  18. Bodmin aren't too happy they have lost it. But lets be honest yes it was close to a line it worked on, but hardly suitable for use most of the year hense the loans to other railways,

I think the Swanage Railway might happily take 30120 on loan for the long term if it is indeed offered to them. Surely the best outcome...

I've a feeling the same benefactor might have an interest in Swanage too.

I think Swanage is the best home for it whilst it is a working engine, and wouldn't it be good to see it in steam and working trains alongside the T3!
