Steady stuff Kristian, well done in heading out in what was really horrendous conditions!

It was bad enough being out at work let alone being out for pleasure so to speak!

Apparently the wheels were rubbing on rivets on the bogie, I would imagine they have adjusted the packing.

An excellent run behind 34046 yesterday. Was always on top of the job and even the 15 minutes delay at the Holme water stop - unspecified loco problem that seemed to respond to some treatment with the big hammer - was turned into an early arrival. The climb up Holloway bank was very good, as was the assault on Manton Bank in Rutland. The latter was really loud by Bulleid standards. Departure from Rowsley was half an hour late but by the time we arrived at Stevenage - where I disembarked - we were slightly early. A fine advert for Southern Pacifics. I can recommend RalphW's taxi service. He met my party at Rowsley and took us to the Devonshire Arms, Beeley. A fine selection of local ales but rather expensive food. Sausage and mash was £12.95!

Oops! 34046 of course. A Freudian slip caused by discussion on a GN group where somebody claimed '46 was the first rebuilt Light Pacific to come our way in preservation if ever. Out came the log books and lo and behold '27 graced local metals in 1998.
Back to the food - I shudder to think what prices graced the full luncheon menu as the banger and mash came from the all day "light" menu.

You mean you're not prepared to pay tourist prices to sample and eat produce fresh from the Chatsworth Estate?

The Dev at Beeley is an Estate-owned pub.

At £12.95 it would still be in the kitchen if I'd been there....................And I'd have told them what I thought of their prices:mad::mad:

RalphW and I might have our differences, but it looks as though he's got good taste in pubs - the food at that place looks really nice http://www.devonshirebeeley.co.uk/food-and-drink/menus/

£12.95 isn't unreasonable if the sausages are good sausages, and the mash is good restaurant-y mash (i.e. loads of butter and not much potato), and it's cooked on demand, not served from a vat; it's good to pay a fair price for produce and service in my book, not drive a race to the bottom on both.

I'd imagine the £23 steak and chips might raise a few eyebrows… ;-)

The bargain of the day was the hot pork cobs at Rowsley buffet. Needless to say they were overwhelmed with the number of visitors that day so the queue was a long one. The two barmen at the Devonshire were wearing tweed jackets though and the lady in our party thought the young waiter was very dishy so somebody went away happy. :)

And all the while visitors pay those prices, they'll continue to charge them.
