Or is painting her that livery a subtle marketing ploy to get more publicity, :photo: if so it seems to be working.

As I have said before - the A1 lads have got it right, a basketful of authentic liveries for their loco and ring the changes.

But when this sort of thing happens I'm gone. I would no more paint my Portsmouth decker in SHMD green, than turn vegetarian. To ponce around talking about "restoration" and then ruin it in the final event in this manner is a total departure from preservation as I practice it, and no amount of petulant posturing by those who lack the quality approach is going to change things.

Its either finished right as a preservation project or it isn't - and in red - it isn't

Remember the apple green back fives and the blue fairburn???? bleugh! - I made a point of avoiding them too

the one of 8624 approaching stubbins really shows the paint job up strikingly, nice, wasn't aware you could photograph trains running tomorrow! maybe you're using the wrong calendar.

Wasn't a 'Black 5' painted apple green in 1948 when they were deciding on BR loco liveries?

To quote Saxondale "I would say - respectfully - that that notion is horse-s**t". These blokes have spent many years restoring their pride and joy, and to turn round and say it "lacks the quality approach" is downright wrong. You wouldn't have someone tell you you haven't restored your bus because they don't like the livery it's painted in! Those who know me will know by views on pseudo-BR liveries on industrials (especially "J94s"), but I'd rather see an austerity running as "680xx" than sat behind the shed rusting because the bloke who decided to paint it in BR livery instead decided not to restore it!

The group have made it quite clear it'll go into BR black (as, it appears, must EVERYTHING in order to suit the baby boom "the time I was growing up was the only time the railways were interesting" generation (apologies if this assumption is untrue but I suspect it isn't...). If you desperately want to see it in BR black NOW, then I suggest you buy it off them, or restore another 8F...

Rant over... It must be the heat

In January 1948, Riddles presented three 'Black 5s' finished in various greens in a display at Kensington Addison Road. 44762 was in SR Malchite green, 44763 in LNER Apple green and 44764 in GWR Brunswick green.
The assembled managers were unable to make up their minds as Riddles had secretly arranged that another 5, which had just come from the Crewe paint shop in full LNWR lined black, to pass on a freight whilst they were inspecting the green ones. This really upset the choice as it looked so smart.
It was also noted that the green ones had actually only been fully lined on the platform side, the other side being left plain...

TB, I think we get the point that you and others don't approve of the colour and therefore appreciate that you and others will avoid it at all costs until it goes black but please change the record.

Those of us that do like it for it being different rather than the norm can have the enjoyment of seeing it at will whilst its in its current livery. It does make a change just like seeing 6233 in black even though some wanted it green. As PSOV have done and will do, leave it well alone but please don't keep going on about it!

It has recently been decieded that the current livery has proved to be such a hit with fare paying passengers that it will be staying for a while longer yet.

Great news! And the longer it keeps annoying people like TB even better! There are enough black locos around to go and fantasise and get excited about....

It's not being done to upset anyone,it's carrying it's current livery because it has proved popular.
Being someone that was born after the end of steam I feel I have an unblinkered view of the situation. The simple fact is that it looks stunning.
I am enormously proud to have spent 25 of my 38 years with the project and to have worked alongside everyone that has been involved with it,not least for the fact that we had the balls to do something different.I am also sure that the good men that we lost along the way would approve and that they are smiling down on us.
I will also not accept anyones biggoted view that questions the quality of the work that we achieved in the circumstances that we endured.Anyone that questions this should hang their head in shame!

I can assure you that the preservation items that I have operated and restored - at substantial personal cost for over thirty years - thank you - will be authentic and will withstand scrutiny.

There is nothing bigoted about being authentic - there is nothing clever about being wrong.

Or ride behind or photograph 48305 at the Great Central or 48151, there are other 8Fs in black to follow, but I would like to say well done to the lads who restored 48624, Its a cracking loco and looks superb, I admire what you've achieved restoring her and how you've done it., I hope its as loud as 48305 :))

I think it would be even more popular if it were painted in an accurate livery.

Think you might be wrong there. It's amazing how small the "I grew up in the 60s and like to see every loco in BR black" group of enthusiasts is as a percentage of preserved railway visitors!

What always saddens me in these situations is the equally hard felt views from either side with almost no willingness to accept the others views . I'll admit i'm not a fan of it's current livery butaccept it is owners perogative as to what colour the engine is painted . The important things is it is earning it's keep and after it's torrid year lets be thankful for that

In time I'm sure we'll see it back in something which makes Tbird and I happy as well

Amongst whom exactly? You can't think that the average member of the public paying to travel would be more excited about a black locomotive than a bright red one? I imagine there's a lot of people who don't mind either way and a few who'd prefer it in red. I can't imagine the average punter thinking 'I wish that red locomotive was black!'. Step back and get a little perspective.
