Well, after a short but successful hire, 8624 has run her last trip on the ELR for this visit and has proved to be a very popular and strong performer on the railway. The locomotive will leave Bury on Thursday for the CVR and I am sure that Greg and the team at Cheddleton will find their new stead to be a valuable asset for the next few months. Once again, we are extremely grateful to the owning group for making the engine available at such short notice and also to Peak Rail and the CVR for their help and co-operation.

And for the record, I never heard one complaint from any visitors to the ELR about the colour scheme whilst 8624 was with us - purists do not fund the restoration (in the main) and I for one believe that decisions on colour schemes are for the owning groups alone and not armchair experts.

    Regards

Hi Gav106, I remember when the first S160 came to the CVR there were several older members who said that the S160s did come down the Valley,on several occausions but there are no photos to prove it one way or another. P/wayman

Er 6023 was BR Blue . Princesses although not 6203 carried BR Red

All this talk of publicity it generated , the loco sat at Peak Rail un used. Playing Devils advocate , did it get no use because it was in LMS Red ? The publicity it has got is becuase two sides cannot accept the others point of view. As for 8F tenders , paint £1000 , new tender £40,000 , come on a little perspective please

The big question is this . To me Preservation is just that , it's portraying something historic as close as we can get within reason to how it was . It's what the national Trust do so well . Battle of Britain flight , Beamish , Ironbridge as other examples .

We now have a new generation of preservationists who have no ties to the historical era of steam but who will be custodians of our railway heritage. It will be interesting to see whether we see a prevalence of hon historic liveries or embracing history

without wishing to demean 8624 but after all she is an 8F , but what if an A4 was turned out in GNER livery or a Hypothetically sponsored 6229 was outshopped in Virgin West Coast . How would you then feel ?

Sidmouth, 46203 had BR blue livery from 5/51 to 3/52. 46206, 46208 and 46210 also had blue livery. All the Princess class were painted in BR green by 8/53 approx. 46200, 46204, 46207 and 46208 were painted in BR maroon livery during 1958.

I tend to agree, I would rather see 6229 out on the main line in a strange livery, than in the correct one, stuck in a museum, after all as has been said before, it's only a coat of paint.

Restoration is recreating the orginal or any variant of the same during it's normal existance. Thus if a loco carried any specific liveries in it's real working life, then any of those liveries are acceptable because it is a restoration to a point in time.

Preservation is simply that... preserving the item in it's current state be it in working order or not.

Actually I'm not that bothered about the liveries as long as the loco's are maintained and fit for the purpose they are used for... mainline or heritage

    Evening All,
I made the journey up on Sunday, with my wife and friends to see 8624 in action for the 40's weekend, and wow were we blown away, both with the crowds and quality of the event itself, and the icing on the cake was seeing and HEARING our 8 performing as she should, I had the priveledge of riding on the footplate, then checking round her, Superb...
NOT ONCE did anyone mention the livery, only the crews saying how good she was, and people all along the lineside waving us by ! I could have written an A4 sheet of problems that would arise from getting some proper use, thankfully only a few surfaced and I'd like to feel she kept her face clean for her 1st visit away.

    Best of British.....

If Mr Branson were to sponser the return to steam of 6299 in return for painting it in West Coast colours for a few years i'd bite his hand off. Rather have it in steam in an odd livery than not in steam at all. It might look quite good as well, it isn't the worst livery around that's for sure, remember the Deltic in purple?!!

Some one should suggest it to Mr Branson. Imagine if Virgin put money into repairs to mainline loco's in return for a year or two in Virgin Livery. Good PR for Virgin and a pressure release for owners.

That was hardly the case though is it? 48624's owners spent years of hard labour restoring it from Barry scrapyard condition and they shold be commended for that. However, if they had painted in an accurate livery, it would still be working. That's the sort of muddled thinking that led to this engine being painted in this horribly inaccurate livery in the first place.

Has there ever been a complaint on this forum about Olton Hall's, aka Hogwarts Castle, livery?

The reason it went into it's horribly inaccurate livery is purely because some people who had had nothing whatsoever to do with restoring the engine decieded that they could tell us what we could or could not do with our engine. The red livery was purely to let such people know that owning groups can do whatever they want.

What are you talking about? The engine was busy at the ELR and now at the CVR. I doubt that colour had much of a bearing on its career at PR - the powers that be there can find plenty of other things to have an argument about other than paint.

8624 has been split today and will be leaving Bury in the morning for its planned hire to the Churnet Valley Railway and I am sure it will prove to be just as popular with crews and visitors at Cheddleton, as it did here at Bury. Once some of the initial teething problems were ironed out, it proved to be a very strong performer and took our very heavily loaded trains during the 1940s Wartime Weekend in its stride. The 48624 Locomotive Company have a good strong locomotive on their hands ... whatever the colour!!!

I would love it if the owners of the 8f considered painting it BR Blue with double arrows, then let it get slowly dirty...

From a historical perspective.. there really wasnt much that could have actually prevented this happening in reality :)

If another 8f was painted maroon would that be historicaly incorrect as 8624 now seems to have made history
Long may it stay maroon or any colour except black
