you would think that 6229 would be in that category of engines not duplicated, in that its been re streamlined and being an 8 p would be probably the most useful engine in the NRM'S stable more so than perhaps 70013, if you want to use the duplicated engine argument its not the same as the other duchess , and possibly having been active before and carries modifications from then,

I don't know how far ahead the Museum's planning is but Mallard must surely be due for some special attention in 2038, not necessarily a return to steam but some kind of celebration at least. I realise I'm talking about nearly 20 years in the future so who knows where things will be then!

I remember living in in york in 2006 and someone who i worked with in york saying that any locomotive in the N.R.M. would never run and are on permanent static display, i know they are not mainline certified but J52 ive heard rumours that could be overhauled to run again i know the lankie radial wouldent be considered to run cos i saw a article in steam railway magazine on it, what about the M7 from nine elms or C1 atlantic 251 henry oakley would that ever run again? Apart a one off occasion for Doncaster works centenery.

....meanwhile, back to 70013, the strip down has started, as both sides have had the connecting rod, crosshead, slide bars, piston and valve removed. DSCF6535.JPG

Could this merely be a strip down for inspection of its condition prior to an agreement being made? Given the GCR shed isn't exactly private (as evidenced by the post above) one might expect an announcement to be made before genuine overhaul work began.

As Quicksilver2501 has pointed out, the GCR Engine shed is not private. It is open to the public and has guided tours on the second weekend each month, manned by a group of "Boscastle" supporters. So if you want to see the progress of work on 70013 come along on May 11/12 when the tours are next being run, it is also the "Goods Galore" Gala weekend.......and "yes" I am one of those tour guides.

I was under the impression that there was no longer public access to the GCR shed. Glad this is no longer the case

It certainly is open for the Shed Tour weekends but, I think, in between those times access is only by arrangement.

Would imagine that a joint NRM/GCR Press Statement would be issued as and when any decision is made as to its future.

You would think that a decision has been made. Otherwise why strip the engine to see about overhaul as that implies the overhaul is going to or more likely has been sanctioned. If no decision made, engine would be left intact until a group was appointed.

Was some sort of work carried out on 70013 last year at G.C.R. Loughborough sheds?

Personally, I'd have thought that the NRM and the GCR might also involve the group who've actually looked after 70013.
