    Dont get excited. It was static, under floodlights by Swanwick box, and with a bucket of oily rags in the smokebox for effect.

    At least it is a runner now.

    And having seen Oliver Cromwell this weekend, I too have to applaud the restoration team for their efforts.

    I think it is a bit steep to complain that 850 'hasn't visited preserved lines in the south' - firstly because it spent quite a time at the West Somerset running in and appeared at a gala (I think), and secondly because it was only in action for a few months before being recalled to York for repairs. Give it a chance!

    Aside from that, once repaied I do hope very much that 850 will come back south for much of the time - it is much more in context here, and such an engine is needed for tours on the Southern. Incidently, I assume that the gauging issues with 777 do not affect 850?

    We still have a policy of not renumbering locos to something they weren't for charters or any other event. Photos of renumbered/named engines could confuse in the future - in fact some enthusiasts have already queried the existence of other long scrapped steam/diesel locos in the heritage era. I'm not going to open that can of worms here though.

    Wasn't there an article a while ago though about allowing 70013 being renumbered as a special one-off?

    Yes, but that is a very special one off for a ceremony which will not attempt to pass the loco off as anything but 70013, is well documented and has a special purpose for the individuals involved. Not going to get into an argument over this!

    Before any more confusion arises, when the Q1 was on loan to the Bluebell
    Railway its identity was never changed to another member of the class.
    However, it was changed from C1 to 33001 twice for photocharters, this
    was carried out with the permisssion of Richard Gibbon/Helen Ashby.

    I take Anthony's point about ID changes causing confusion - but the public can happily confuse themselves without such assistance!

    On Green Arrow's last run, the Super D was on the back and I overheard a chap saying he had fired the Super D's sister loco (!) at the West Somerset in the 1990s(!)! A good trick on at least two points!

    I noted the comment to the Super D's driver for the day, John Fletcher, who told me he had fired Duke of Gloucester on the mainline to Holyhead, where a punter came up and said his dad had driven every member of the locos class on BR! I asked if John had replied with his driver had just done likewise!
