Looking at this http://www.71000trust.com/news.html in the section for December 2009 it says
"The Duke is featured on the front cover of the latest edition of Steam Railway magazine. Also covered is an exclusive insight into repairs to 71000's inside cylinder." So perhaps there is truth in it.
There was no doubt from other videos taken last Saturday that she seemed to be in fine form.

In terms of the "potential" of 71000, I wasn't particularly thinking of high speed, but rather a maximum output climb of Shap with a "substantial" load.
What a pity there is no preserved main line operational dynamometer car....

( said he making an assumption, and quickly ordering a taxi....)

A Dyno car would be an interesting addition to the working exhibits at York. Maybe another project to restore the one they have there. Substantial load would I assume need to be 13 + dead diesel as 6233 took earlier this year, some 620 tons.

I thought the Trust owned a dynamometer car? Wasn't it tucked inside the locomotive during its first few return to the main line specials?

They did or maybe still do. It was the converted GWR Hawksworth coach in chocolate & cream. Not sure if it would be allowed out on the main line now though, I'm pretty sure it is wooden framed.

Isn't a dyno car a bit of an anachronism these days ? With so much technology available to us now couldn't some sensors be added direct to a Loco and plugged into a laptop ? Theres plenty of proprietry motorsport performance measurement software that could probably be tweaked to work on rails without having to go to the trouble of restoring a traditional dyno car. No doubt there is also professional railway software available as well ?

I'm not very well versed in all the electronic wizardry mainline locos have to carry these days but I think at least some of the 'sensors' are already in place in the OTMR system?

Indeed that would be possible (in theory at least). I have the outline design of a system to do this using readily available parts, complete with WiFi link to a laptop in the support coach. It would involve using strain gauges to measure the drawbar load. Some US diesels already have a facility of this kind.

So good to see DoG Working again.
Sad though it is to see Clan Line and Tornado sidelined, 71000 most likely needs every possible gig Given the recent intermediate how long is the boiler good for now ?/ extension possible ?

Could someone confirm for me where the duke is now please, I understood that following her jaunt last saturday, she would run back to Bury light with support coach from Blackburn, However she was sighted at Pleasington and Bamber bridge but did not pass through Leyland.
I therefore assume she ran up to Carnforth, despite no sightings being recorded.

Since she is doing the run down to Bristol from Preston next week, I would think you are right in you assumption about going to Carnforth in readiness.

I would think this will be unlikely due to this tour being a DBS operation. I would suspect the ECS would run up from Crewe in the early morning.

The Duke went to Bury after it was detatched from the train last Saturday and will stay there until it goes to Bristol next week.

I would like to know how she got to Bury from Blackburn via Bamber bridge without passing through Leyland, seems unlikely to me.

Are you certain because I have a friend who is involved with signalling at Bury and he did not see her arrive Saturday evening.

71000 is, at present, in the ELR's Baron Street shed.

    Hi guys,

...or perhaps the 16 on = 616 tons hauled by 46251 from a dead stand at Tebay to passing Shap Summit unassisted in 22.31 on Saturday, August 22 (?) 1963, on the 19.30 FO Euston - Perth (if I recall correctly).

She (we) arrived at Tebay so close behind the preceding train that the troughs hadn't refilled, and a stop had to be made for water. The earlier train took the last banker...

I was well-positioned in the front coach, and the conversation went like this:

Driver: "Now then bobby, where's the banker then?"

Bobby: "Last one's just gone up. The next one's just on his way down bank - he'll be here in about ten."

Driver: (turns round, presumably to have a quick word with his fireman, then turns back to face the bobby) "F... it, pull off:"

    And Nottingham never even slipped...

I found out later that the fireman was "Piccolo Pete", of Crewe North, so it doesn't surprise me they went it alone!

By the way, could we perhaps have some reference to find youtube items - one I'd love to have seen refers to "climbing up to the tunnel", but I can't find it...

    Best wishes to all
