:frusty::frusty::frusty::frusty::frusty: Strewth, they're arguing about a name on a locomotive. Paint, names, diesels on the back of steam tours, headboards. What next.
The locomotive is running, DOES IT MATTER? :rolleyes1:

"for some reason the South Devon are following their lead."

That bit was announced on April 1st !!!

So that should reduce your BP by a small amount.

So we have a 50 year old engine and it should be as it was built apply that to every other engine and there would be no BR liveries bring it on. It was only in service for 6 years so the other 44 don't count.

Looking at the photo of 92214 whilst it is disappointing they've put nameplates on the deflectors it's surely not going to be a massive problem Photoshopping them out.

How many more times does it have to be said that the important issue is someone with the time enthusiasm and money restoring another engine of whatever lineage to working order. Better that than rusting away quietly in some siding or shed.
If said people wish to paint it in a particular livery or give it a spurious name, then so be it. Owners perogative.

Be thankful we have so much working steam 52 years on from "the end of steam".

OK some of this might share the view that this is the Cock (up) of the North (Yorkshire) but hell the nameplates are probably held on by all of two bolts each and easily removed when good taste prevails!

I sincerely doubt the naming of the 9F will stop either of the two P2 groups from using the LNER number and name if they want.

It's theirs to do with as they please. Personally speaking, it wouldn't be my preference, but the nameplates do look smart and are striking. R.A. Riddles is a name that could have easily gone on a 9F mind, if you want to tie into history of the class...

It's somewhat amusing to think Britannia is running sans nameplates at present, and more 9Fs will be running with them!

If another 9F has to be named then R. A. Riddles would have been a nice touch but I suspect the NYMR marketing department feel that it lacks the "magic" of Cock 'O The North. I'd prefer it unnamed but it won't be stopping me from going to the NYMR as I managed to miss 92220 when it was there so have never experienced a 9F getting to grips with the 1 in 49. Definitely one on my "to do" list for 2011.

Personally I would have prefered the LMS and BR to follow the LNW & GW lead and give names to all their passenger and mixed traffic types (and the 9F did become just plain 9 so denoting a mixed traffic engine), so I'm not too fussed about this development.

Cock Of The North? Well I'm not too sure about that, but perhaps I'm being a bit too PC! I think that the NYMR could have chosen a name that didn't commemorate a particularly brutal northern warlord, but there you go. It's their choice to make, not mine.

    Regards

Seems a lot of fuss about nothing. If you don't like the name, ignore it.

    ...welcome to national preservation!

On a serious note though the owner is in control and has the final say. If a nameplate is a serious concern book a photocharter with a request to not have the nameplates on for the charter. Everyone wins, money for loco group/ owner and engine in the appearance of those it concerns.

    Regards

What a fuss over nothing, so another 9f gets to carry a nameplate , now if they had repainted it in highland green (stroudley yellow) then that would be worth creating about , but they havnt, thinking about this, i think that a standard should be named R A Riddles after the designer and what better than an 9f

Nothing to do with the NYMR its the owning consortium who have chosen the name.
    As said earlier "Owners perogotive"

Did it last September, she sounded marvellous on 'that' bank. I feel lucky now that I have photos of 92214 sans nameplates.

I'm not fussed, naming 9F's in preservation has become quite common. 92203 wasn't named Black Prince until preservation, ADB968008 mentioned 92207. Wasn't 92214 renamed temporarily a few years ago after a naming competition.

Also the A1 Trust's plans for a P2 are that it be numbered 2007 so it wouldn't named Cock O' The North (however the Doncaster P2 Group want they're P2 to be a replica of Cock O' The North)

I do admit that Robin Riddles or R.A Riddles would be a nice name for a 9F. He was Steam's last locomotive designer and the 9F's were Britains last class of locomotive to be built (excluding Industrials).

Looked ok in the "flesh" today and did a 9 minute stroll up the 1 in 49 to Goathland......

It even pinched part of the class 24s diagram!
