The Rolvenden carriage shed has just come into use on the KESR. 14 vehicles were moved into it last week, including all the operating vintage carriages. Even with all of these it is still not full. It will be a very useful facility.

    Hello
There are stirrings on the SVR regarding a wagon shed.......to house 50 wagons.
There was a Lottery fund application some years ago.
Interest had gained over the last few months.

The view from my window hasn't changed much but the ease of shunting at Tenterden has greatly improved!

That would certainly be good. I understand HLF is more keen for things like this to have an educational value, i.e. not having it all stored away from sight, so potentially a building that has some degree of public access which would be nice.

"Nice" rather underplays it. "Essential" is more the case.

There was a plan for the Swanage railway to build a carriage shed, but now seems to have died a death!

Being that they (Swanage) are by the Sea (salt air) and they are looking at having a set of Pre Mk1 coaches (Bullied i think) then it seems a non brainer that a shed is paramount. To me money spent on a shed is an investment that is expensive but pays back in the long term. In so many places i have seen restoration being done, then often before the thing is restored having to be done again because the carrage or wagon has been left out side. In my view if you can always fund cover first then restore once and restoration will not need doing for many years, wear and tare allowing.

Good luck to the SVR on hopeful plans to build a Wagon Shed. Public access please some of us find wagons as interesting as locos.

Swanage planned for a 8 car shed split into 2 lanes at Herston, but 5 car sets became the norm and the plan was postponed. If it was built then Swanage would have a 3 car Pullman dinning set. Swanage are planning to invest in storage and maintenance space in the near future due to the Wareham DMU service

I will agree with that as well.
I think our group is the largest rolling strong stock owner on the NYMR.
Nearly all being wagons or On Track Plant.
And yes we have a shed.

Out of interest, what sort of price range are we talking for a basic shed that would cover two coaches, plus an area for a work shop. Say 80ft by 40ft two track so carriages on adjacent tracks, rollers shutters at one end.

    Hello,
I think the biggest obstacle faced by many heritage railways is the land/space to erect a shed.
Add planning, services etc and the cost goes up and up!

Ideally if you want to work on the carriage you want as much room again to work on the interior components adjacent to the vehicle.
