Are DMU's easy to look after ie restore, run and get spare parts.
What are the problems of owning one and are they great fun to drive?
    :p

If you want one, I believe Class 107 are still on the look out for a new home for one unit.

DMUs are very difficult to keep going. The transmission system is relatively complicated in comparison to some other loco systems and the spare parts list is naturally growing shorter. You also need to have a good hand with everything from engineering and electronics to the delicate stuff like woodwork and painting for inside. Having said that, I believe that they are great fun because you have a coach, with somewhere to drive and parts similar to a loco as well! It goes without saying that they are fun to drive because you get a lovely view out of the front as you go along.

How long is a piece of sting? :)

They are similar to coaches in that, if you catch them straight out of service then you can sometimes get away with a "deep clean". Park them in a siding in a quarry for 20 years - well you might be "deep cleaning" for a little while longer!

I think 90% of the "easy" DMU restorations are already in service. Just the rotten ones left now!

Those 107s really would be a challenge!
