The public will recognise it in any colour or configuration if you tell them it is Flying Scotsman. It's only enthusiasts that need a number/colour to help them recognise it.

It might look great but it wouldn't be a 'restoration' now would it? My guilty pleasure would be to paint it blue with a grumpy Gordon face on the front.

You'd have to back-convert to single chimney, no smoke deflectors form first though

Such simple and straightforward modifications are just routine and formality - I was referring to the important matter of a COAT OF PAINT. :)

I thought this too but question is what form do you then present 4468 in? The current corridor tender behind 60103 has been much modified in preservation (in fact I think I'm right in saying it had a new body in the late '70's) and it would be a significant task to restore it to 'in service' condition. I don't think 4468 received a corridor tender
until 1948 in which case the tender would have to be lettered 'BRITISH RAILWAYS' and the loco would need to lose the valances . That really would be messing with an icon!

We've already got one mongrel Gresley pacific in the National Collection, I think this proposal, attractive as it is at face value, will just create two mongrels.

Correct and it probably wouldn't get certified for the mainline without the deflectors having a double chimney. As NRM is obligated to authenticity it has to be turned out the way planned. Happily in its final form its performance should be optimised too. Win win.
If it is ever stuffed and mounted though it should be in its as originally preserved style as this is its iconic form IMO.

You actually believe that the public would even notice the double or single chimney? this is typical of many enthusiasts, because it's obvious to them they assume that everyone can see the difference, or even cares.... They don't and they don't.

Erm, we've already had one post recounting one non enthusiast asking "what are those things on the front" so at least one member of the public has noticed the deflectors.

That was Blue Streak - not of the A4 variety, though. There's a railway connection in that Hudswell, Clarke built the nose cones.

4468 had 1928 corridor tender no 5323 from 7/48 to 3/53 then streamlined corridor tender no 5648 to 7/58, 1928 corridor tender no 5330 to 5/62 and finally streamlined corridor no 5642. It's current tender is streamlined non corridor no 5670 renumbered as its original tender no 5642. If anyone is interested it had 12 different boilers in a 25 year operating life, the last one coming from 60009 USA. So what is a mongrel engine?

On 4468/22/60022, I suppose the "authenticity" question is what condition was in it in 1938? Based on nothing, I'd always assumed that on the big day it had a corridor tender. If not, then leave it as it is.

(Though amusingly, the NRM's own website has a lovely picture of 60022 in 1951- at least this is prototypical for having the wee button amidships...: http://www.nrm.org.uk/ourcollection/photo?group=Doncaster&objid=1997-7396_DON_51_204 )

Excuse me for being a bit late to the 'party', but what the hell is all this froth about what Scotsman should, or should not look like in the eye's of Joe Public?........ Scotsman is Scotsman, and writes her own history by the day........ "Digger Dawn" sure had no problems, almost wetting herself over the prospect over seeing her on the ELR sans nameplates, carrying three numbers & running tender first in wartime Matt black!

Lets face it folks, Scotsman is back & in the rudest health she's been for a long time, and we should rejoice in that & thank the NRM for sticking to their guns & seeing the job through! :):):)

Oh, and the Haynes Manual was due for publication in 2010........................ :Jawdrop:

So to paraphrase AC/DC.......... Scotsman was...................

the Haynes manual is now printed and 'out'.

i still think that applying modern research there should be no reason why FS's draughting should not be revisited and would result in the original single chimney and no need for smoke deflectors.

there can be little doubt that the classic image of FS is without smoke deflectors and with single chimney. i wont enter into the livery debate.

    cheers,
    julian
