Have to agree with you there. That is its best appearance. Swiss Toni's picture of 4472, FS looks awful. His 60103 photo, as Victor says, is the dog's da...........

Single chimney, double chimney, brunswick green or apple green...... does it really matter??? The main thing is she is out there living, breathing and flying the flag for steam and creating a much needed steam buzz which the preservation movement really does need.

    Well done all involved.

In your opinion maybe but there's a whole legion of fans out there who are rather partial to her LNER guise.

For me, this format with the A4 tender is entirely achievable (at the next overhaul). Would mean Scotsman could be LNER 4472 (immediately pre-war), post war LNER as 103 and in this British Railways form.

I quite like the interim liveries of early BR days so E103 with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender would be rather nice IMO.

Of course we are looking at Flying Scotsman and basing our views of the livery applied on what will always be a hybrid with that tender.

Pegler IMO was right to get a corridor tender to make her representative of the class, but the tender selected to replace her non corridor one was a nice selection in terms of the history of the LNER (for its one of the exchange trial tenders).

In preservation, the LNER eight wheel tenders we have includes the W1s tender. The only regrettable thing was losing Bitterns original non corridor tender when she was last overhauled. That for me was sad, and IMO it would have been better if the intention was to make a new corridor tender that a replica of the original A4 streamlined corridor tender would have been better in terms of representation in preservation than another ex-A3 corridor tender. A real shame.

So where do you get an A4 tender from and presumably you would want to alter it back to right hand drive. Dream on, it isn't going to happen.

Dear me John. Bit angry today?

A4 tender swap with Mallard. No you don't swap the drive over, and I've never suggested that. That's clearly impractical.

I'm not suggesting it becomes a permanent change - but it's certainly doable. Just a suggestion for all those who'd like to see Scotsman look even closer to authentic another time in the distant future.

And yes - wouldn't it be something to see E103 in apple green alongside Tornado one day. That'd be cool.

I wouldn't mind seeing a line up of 60163, 60532 and 60103 all in BR apple Green.

But all that's important is that she is back in steam and running well straight out the box, with a public eager to go out and see her when they can, whatever her number and livery.

I'm not angry at all and it's not me you would have to convince, it's the NRM. Good luck.

Picture taken from the Hamlyn book "Steam Locomotives of British Railways" copyright H.C. Casserley (Page 362) in the edition I own! Recognized it straight away! I spent many happy hours with my grandfather studying this book when I was a youngster, fond memories.

Apologies all for the thread drift - but felt the need to share (he says with tears in his eyes). I'm so glad my Mum captured this moment as my Grandfather introduced me to the wonderful world of Railways and the joys of Steam Locomotives. One of my biggest regrets in life is that I was never able to travel with him on the mainline - He was an LNER man through and through so I'm sure would of approved of Scotsman's return.

The book referred to earlier is in the picture - in fact I still have both books in my collection!

Edit - we are actually looking at the exact page and that exact picture posted by S.A.C. Martin!

Do you know, this brought a tear to my eye as I remember doing exactly the same thing with my late grandfather. He also had the Pocket Book of Railway Locomotives, and in that edition is a particularly stunning colour photograph of one of his favourite locomotives - the rebuilt W1. That photograph always brings forth old emotions and fond memories, and I also regret never having been able to travel on the mainline with him. He too was an LNER man through and through and the stories of his spotting days he used to tell me became the basis for my children's stories, including the locomotives he loved (which for reference were W.P. Allen, Sir Ralph Wedgwood, B12 no.8572, and a number of other LNER locomotives, though sadly he never mentioned the Thompson Pacifics I like these days).

Flying Scotsman was introduced to me by my father, however, and it was the very first steam locomotive I encountered. I remember it all clear as day and I am lucky because my father - an avid film maker in his spare time - took a whole video of that day at Llangollen in Wales. She was, for reference, in BR dark green as 60103 and with the full blinkers applied. Seeing her in King's Cross in that form in over a week's time is going to be amazing.

Thank you for sharing that photograph - it's a wonderful photograph.

Didn't 100 cause the most scandal in 1902? Nothing remotely like it had previously been seen this side of the Atlantic.

And I say again, how is 4468 going to be presented if it's tender is coupled to Scotsman?

It just won't happen there's no need and funds are now needed to get a certain red streamliner up and running.
