That's the convertible version, with the removable cockpit which could then be driven on the roads after landing. However, they had to move the controls across to the right side for driving on UK roads.

Oh no they didn't, I was given one well used model, by a cousin, for my 21st birthday, it was left hand drive and the door was hinged on tha left as well. The steering wheel, which was attached to the door, moved away from you to give you room to get out. 250cc BMW single cylinder 4 stroke engine, max speed could be built up to about 75mph if you had enough road and patience...

Looking absolutely fantastic! It will be wonderful to see her back in steam soon.

Anthony, can you tell us how much work has been done and where? At £1m, it must have been a Rolls Royce overhaul! What sort of condition is she in now?

its worth remembering that throwing money at an engine doesnt mean it going to be done properly, its all down to where the work was done, and by who , but given that she was done by Rilleys and York , the standard these guys work to , restoration i would expect will mean that she is as good as new

Посмотреть вложение 2761 After the journey from hell yesterday to get to the NRM, here is my humble offering.

Anthony, having now caught up with this thread, after yesterdays trials & tribulations,I know that it has been clearly stated by your good self on here that Apple Green is imminent, but what are the chances, for us enthusiasts, of seeing her in black at Barrow Hill?(would the powers be at the NRM dare to think about it)

BTW well done to every one involved with the loco - breathtakingly beautiful.

With the double chimney they'll stay on. I think the NRM tried in 2004/2005 during a run to Scarborough without them and the drivers struggled with visibility or something similar. I'd love to see a single chimney restored but will probably cost a bit and I'm not sure if there is a pattern for one to be cast.

I'm not fussed as long as we get to enjoy her on the mainline and preserved railways.

I guess much will depend upon whether the owners actually want to put a single chimney on it when there's nothing technically wrong with what it's got at the moment.

The cost of having a pattern and casting made is going to pale into insignificance compared to what the overhaul will have cost to date. The fact that it wasn't planned into the overhaul project probably means it isn't going to suddenly reappear with new front end any time soon.

Don't forget that the whole point of the double chimney is that performance is improved which is important out on the main line. I do find it funny that the NRM argues that Scotsman must stay in Apple Green because its the "brand" and then at the most important event for her of the last few years, the big public launch and debut, they paint her wartime black?!

Still it does look absolutely fantastic (while its clean) although I still feel I'm looking at a matt finish OO gauge model in the photos!
