I think for this period of running, leaving the double chimney and smoke deflectors ON is the best thing. You'll get apple green, british railways dark green, and both extremes be happy, and to boot, we've had wartime black into the equation for running in.

I don't know if the NRM would be ameanable to such an idea, but given there's been quite a lot of buzz over Hamilton's restreamlining, perhaps a "single chimney appeal" in the future (at the next overhaul) would be a decent way of securing funds to create said pattern, and similar?

The only thing I would be cautious with is how that affects the locomotive's performance. Peter Townend has written in his book, Top Shed, and Cecil J. Allen has echoed his thoughts in British Pacific Locomotives, that the single chimney arrangement was inadequate for the A3s, and that the Kylchap brought out the best in these locomotives. The suggestion there is for the best of both worlds: a single chimney with a lempor type exhaust, able to do the same job as the Kylchap but allow a single chimney to be installed, to restore the best form of the locomotive in question.

I might add, it would also allow everyone the chance to see an almost authentic Express Passenger Blue Scotsman...!!!

But the above is merely supposition and is of no relevance to the fabulous job done on the locomotive this time around. Once again, bravo to the NRM, Steve Davies, the 4472 Express Club, Ian Riley's locomotive works, all the sponsors and donators to the cause, and lastly - because she never is thanked - 4472 herself. I am always amazed by how much the love for one particular locomotive, and its history, can bring so many like minded people together, for the greater good of this movement.

Maybe the smokebox internals that came out when the Kylchap and double chimney were fitted still exist, wasn't it sometime in the 1990's when the loco had an overhaul at an engineering concern in the West Midlands? I can see the "Steam Railway" cover in my mind's eye now, with the loco stood on temporary track outside said factory. ( Was it Babcock ?)

You are quite right to refer readers back to Peter Townend's comments about the rejuvenation of the A3's with the fitting of the Kylchap exhaust, and also the improved performance of the double-Kylchap fitted A4's. ( Townend comments that "Mallard"'s record was due in part to the free steaming resulting from it having the Kylchap exhaust) Townend covers this evolution in detail in chapter 10 of "Top Shed", ( including detailed smokebox diagrams)... necessary reading for anyone interested in the LNER Pacifics, particularly in their latter years.

About 1999 I believe, I remember seeing it returning from it's overnight test runs (from Westbury I believe) whilst on early shift. It was still in grey undercoat, I also think that it was when it was fitted with air brakes.

Re my earlier comments, Scotsman was overhauled at Babcock Engineering, Oldbury West Mids in 1993, but does appear to have the double chimney and Kylchap fitted before then. Maybe it was a change to BR livery as 60103 that happened with this overhaul.

No mention of anything on ELR website as yet, although I was wondering if there will be any official publicity about the running in turns, or whether they'll just fit in around normal service trains?

If Scotsman is at the ELR for running in, in NE Black, prior to an official relaunch..

maybe now is the best time to run it in another identity for a while ?

I wouldnt have thought there would be much call for that to be honest. Its not as if Scotman couldn't pull in crowds, in fact its more likely to pull in people as Scotsman than any other name/number. Would just be a waste of name/number plates.

Also, given the lack of anything being on the ELR website about it, I'm starting to wonder if they have any permission to use Scotsman on any service trains or photo charters. You would have thought there would be something by now, even if it was just to announce that she was on site for pictures.

I would imagine that's because she's gone back to the works for completion and therefore isn't on public view. I seem to recall that the NRM did issue a statement a while back that the loco would be run in at the ELR, so I believe they do have permission for service trains, not sure about photo charters as the NRM might want to get the maximum publicity when she's launched on the mainline. When the loco is completed and starts running in I'm sure the ELR/NRM will publicise it!

I expect they'll start off very low-key. A few light engine moves after the day-time service has ended, maybe a bit of double-heading, and nothing announced in advance because the engineers would probably keep changing their minds ;-)

If we ask nicely, someone like Anthony Coulls, Ian Riley or someone from the ELR might be kind enough to give us the tip when a trip is planned, but that can probably only be done on the day.

If the running-in goes well, I wonder if the ELR might arrange a late-notice special weekend before she leaves?

What I'm really looking forward to, and hoping we get a few days notice of, are the first mainline runs. Will they be run from Bury, Carnforth or York? My guess is that she'll return to York under her own steam, then work a couple of test trains to Scarborough, or perhaps around the Harrogate loop. Will we see her on the Scarborough Spa Express before the end of the season? Who knows?

uksteam shows 4472 on Scarborough trips at some point. I think "4472" is the only engine that doesn't follow the "BR number" policy on there!

EDIT: Yes just checked the 17th and 18th September provisional York to Scarborough and return.
