Superb film about the return of 60103. It is on iplayer, or BBC4 this evening.

Two nitpicks: 1minute 34 seconds in, the dubbed whistle is of a Stanier loco. Might just have been one of the double-headed runs on the ELR though..

Second, no mention of having to drop out a wheelset whilst at York being painted. Near the end of the film the comment is that a broken spring nearly scuppered the inaugural run. The broken spring was earlier, it was sorting the wheelset that might have been a problem for Kings-X to York.

However, still a lovely film to watch, and very well made and narrated. Lots of well deserved exposure for Ian Riley's team.

I think it has had three broken springs, so far, the last one found at York.

Just watched it on iPlayer. Brilliant. So good to see footage of a smiling Alan Pegler, brought a tear to my eye.

Ditto. What nearly brought a tear to my eye was seeing Ron Smith getting all choked up when he mentioned his father.

Just watched the BBC Documentary on the iplayer. A superb programme. Several sections brought a tear to the eye especially the parts on Alan Pegler and the interview with Driver Ron Smith.
I will be watching again later on BBC4.

Good that Belmond British Pullman got a mention for their at short notice assistance by providing facilities and shunting.

Not true, the broken spring was found on the Sunday prior to the Inaugural after the engine was reassembled. It meant Mondays test run had to be pushed back 24 hours due to the spare spring being away for overhaul at the time with the returned overhauled spring fitted on the Monday afternoon. Loco then weighed, boiler water changed and fire lit approx 21.30. Test run Tuesday, London move Wednesday and the rest is history...

If the broken spring had been found any later then it'll have likely been game over.

No mension of the hot box on the LE/ POB move to York either, or the extra remedial work needed to fix it, Also does anyone know why the A1 trusts support coach was used, and not Riley's own,

A very good documentary. I enjoyed the cab scenes with the enthralling soundtrack. I was surprised there was not much aerial footage shown, considering the extra effort that the BBC chopper managed in my video !

Really enjoyed the documentary and hopefully they'll bring it out on DVD (like the Tornado one) maybe with the bits from that interactive website that didn't make the programme.

Any ideas when we might see the Robson Green one? I think it was due to air last month but still no sign of it turning up yet.

I made a brief cameo at just around 24 minutes ;)

Excellent programme, giving due credit to the folks who made it happen and very enjoyable for that. A good half hour package

I agree with all the positive comments. My main disappointment was it was only 30 minutes. I am sure they could have filled an hour

    My sentiments exactly.

I for one would love to see the Time shift programme updated.

As for @martin1656's comment re the swap of support coaches - I can only surmise that it was a swap for a MK I to fit in with the rest of the rake, seeing as how the POB that came down was a MK II........

It was a thirty minute documentary, not a filmed record of every turn of a spanner. As such, the producer has to pick a few major themes to illustrate the story so as not to lose the general audience in detail. Given limited screen time, far more revealing, and interesting, to show the craftsmanship of painting and lining the cab number, for example, than to go off on a tangent about an issue with a basically unrelated carriage.

Scotsman's whistle needs dubbing. That awful squeaky wheeze it's got right now is unbecoming.
