Ian Riley has posted a set of pictures on another forum. 4472 is still very much a kit of parts. The new parts have been made (motion brackets, inside and outside, main frame stretcher) and are being prepped for fitting to the frames. There are also some pictures of 34046 minus her driving wheels.

Look, all this joking about 'the dark side' etc is all well and good, but not very useful for those of us who want to see the pictures, but do not know which forum you are talking about. It's quite annoying.

It's been mentioned that it's Ian Riley's own forum "The Works". IIRC you'll need to create an account to view threads.

A number of photos of ongoing work have been posted on the NRM's Flying Scotsman website.
The hornblocks have been hot riveted to the frames, as has the new main stretcher. They were originally held in place by fitted bolts. What are your thoughts about this?

Hot riveting was used on the majority of locos I don't think there is anything to be gained by using fitted bolts but there is a lot to be saved in money by not using them.

Interestingly I see a new big end strap and new axle box in the pictures plus lots of refurbished parts all obviously missed first time round,

In an idle moment I started to wonder just how much of the loco is now "original" in the broadest sense, apart from the mainframes, but that would be a quite silly thing to do, would'nt it? It's Flying Scotsman.

Depends what you mean by original - it's a dangerous word. Original to what exactly? 4472 itself? The boiler is original A3 even if it was not carried by 4472 at any time in its 'service' life. Does that make it 'non-original'?

    Original 1923? Minimal.
Original to it's days 'in service' as opposed to 'in preservation'? Probably a fair amount - 80% plus.
Original as in new but done exactly as it would have been done then? Don't know.

A very interesting set of pictures. It's good to see she is finally getting the overhaul she has needed for a long time. A marvellous effort from Riley and co what with all the work they already had/have going on.
